Don Bosco Evening

Written by

Salesian School Chertsey hosted a Don Bosco Evening on 14th June 2012 as part of the preparations for the Bicentenary of the Birth of Don Bosco in 2015.

Year 7 student Kylah Burgoyne reports:

We were warmly welcomed by the hosts Melissa Anaman and Jude Falconer. Throughout the evening, the presenters and performers were very well planned and organised. Clear speaking was the key and they nailed it.

Bosco Magic at Chertsey

Written by

Students at Salesian School Chertsey have the opportunity of expert tuition in magic from a Salesian Cooperator who is a member of the Magic Circle.

Brian Barnes with aspiring young magicians

Recently Br Jakub Ruszniak SDB, from Poland, spent two years with the Salesian Community at Chertsey and taught in the Chertsey Salesian College. Because of Br Jakub's interest in conjuring, Fr Andrew Ebrahim, the Rector, introduced him to one of the Salesian Cooperators, Brian Barnes, who happens to live almost next door to the SDB Community. Brian's interest in magic started in 1955, his last year at the Salesian College at Cowley (Oxford), and he has been a member of the famous Magic Circle since 1969.

Saint James' 125th Birthday

Written by

On a very rainy Sunday 3rd June 2012, the Salesian Parish of Saint James' Bootle celebrated 125 years of ministry within the Bootle Community. To mark the beginning of this day Fr Martin Coyle, the SDB provincial, celebrated Mass in a full church. Our regular congregation was joined by former parishioners, Staff and Governors of both Savio Salesian College and All Saints Primary, and pupils from the same schools.

The Parish community gathered at Mass

After the Thanksgiving Mass we took the short walk over to the primary school where, since 7am Sunday morning, our Youth Team had been setting up the 'Fun Festival'. Every single young and not so young person enjoyed the fun filled day, even though the weather was dreadful.

Scouts at Savio

Written by

From 25th to 27th May 2012, one of the hottest weekends of the year, Savio House welcomed over 100 campers from the National Catholic Scout Fellowship who were gathering to celebrate Pentecost and the diamond jubilee of the queen. Bishop Richard Moth, the bishop for the forces in Great Britain, led the Eucharists, camped with the scouts and shared the whole weekend with the leaders and the young people.

Bishop Moth preaches at Mass on Pentecost Sunday

We hope that organised camps will be an important part of Savio House's service to the province in the years ahead, although we can't guarantee the same weather.

Salesians at 'Flame'

Written by

It is said in football circles that 'all roads lead to Wembley' and that was certainly true as 8500 young people and their youth leaders, teachers, catechists, Sisters, Priests and Bishops gathered in Wembley Arena on 24th March 2012 for 'Flame', a National Youth Congress organised by CYMFed (Catholic Youth Ministry Federation). And the Salesians were there in front - literally! With 550 participants we were the largest single co-ordinated group at the event and had front row seats. We had specially designed 'Salesians of Don Bosco' scarves for the occasion and so we were a very visible presence.
