News from Tunisia

Written by

Fr Laurence Essery SDB, a Salesian from Great Britain who is now a member of the Maltese Delegation, is based in Tunisia, where there has been unrest from December 2010. He sent the following report on 17th January 2011.

As you will no doubt know from the TV and press, Tunisia is in turmoil and we in Manouba are not too far from from the 'epicentre', the city of Tunis itself. Yesterday in particular there was a sustained gun battle in the streets around us we believe between the army and police loyal to the ousted president.

News from Jerusalem

Written by

Fr Gianni Caputa, who teaches at the Salesian Theological College, Ratisbonne, Jerusalem, has sent the following news of celebrations for the Feast of Saint John Bosco.

While tumultuous events seem to be engulfing many parts of the Middle East at the moment, and we do not forget our Salesian Family in Tunisia and Egypt (and Sudan, and in many other parts of that region), there was time and tranquility in Jerusalem, on Sunday 30 January, for the Salesian Family to solemnise the Don Bosco's Feast day in the Latin Rite with a children's Mass in a local Parish. The youth choir sang together with the students of theology. The Franciscan Parish Priest, Fr Firas Hijazeen commented on the day's Gospel in his homily: "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth". Fr Gianni Caputa provides us with an overview of the commentary.

Project Europe: 2011 to 2012

Written by

Salesian Provincials from all over Europe, including our GBR Provincial Fr Martin Coyle, met in Rome at the end of November 2010 to review the progress of Project Europe and plan for the next two years.

Project Europe involves
  • Revitalisation from within of the Salesian presences in Europe
  • Relocation and restructuring of the Salesian presences in Europe
  • Europe as a mission territory

Based on the discussions of the European Provincials, an action plan for 2011 to 2012 has been published. It describes tasks at various levels for the Rector Major and his Council, the European Regions and Provinces and the non-European Regions and Provinces. These include education and publicity, reviewing criteria for Salesian schools, parishes and youth work, and preparation and support for missionaries coming from outside Europe to help with a new proclamation of the Gospel in a continent in danger of losing its Christian identity.

You can read and download the action plan (Interventi) and other documents from the Project Europe page on the central Salesian website. Please note that you may need to sign up, for this website if you have not already done so. Registration is free.

Becoming a member only means reading the book and then being willing to join in a discussion of its contents with the author.

Salesians in Teheran

Written by

Fr John Dickson has sent this fascinating account of an unexpected meeting with two Salesian Past Pupils from Iran.

November, with the return of winter, reminds us traditionally of the Holy Souls and invites us to think of our memories of those who have gone before us. This November has been particularly vivid for me as you will see.

New Salesian Cooperators Centre in Cornwall

Written by

On 8th December, the Feast day of the Immaculate Conception, 2010, at the church of Mary Immaculate in Falmouth, a new Centre for Salesian Cooperators was launched and six new Cooperators were enrolled.

During the Mass, Paul Barnes, who along with his wife, Maria, have been cooperators for many years, formally applied for the Centre to be opened. Paul outlined how work had been ongoing for three years to the day since the idea was first muted. Subsequently written permission had been obtained from Rt Rev Bishop Christopher Budd, Bishop of Plymouth and the agreement of the Provincials of the Salesians of Don Bosco and of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Great Britain
