The next GBR Provincial

Written by

The next Provincial of the GBR Province will be Fr Martin Coyle.

In November 2009, Fr Fabio Attard came to the UK for just under a week to carry out a consultation process for the next Provincial of the GBR Province. The members of the General Council considered the matter during their winter meeting, but at the request of Fr Michael Winstanley the decision was kept secret until after Christmas.

Opening of All Saints RC Primary, Bootle

Written by

The new Bootle super school, All Saints RC Primary based in the Salesian parish of St James, was officially opened on Friday 4th December 2009 by Bishop Tom Williams, auxiliary of Liverpool, and our local MP, Mr Joe Benton, who is also a governor of Savio Salesian College. The school offers a state of the art educational and community facility that is open from 7.30am to late at night and is only closed for two weeks in the year! As a Salesian parish we are delighted that the school is sited opposite our beautiful parish church of St James and see it as an intrinsic part of our Salesian mission here in Bootle. The new school shows our parish vision statement at work: with Christ and the Church, building the future, in Bootle, on firm foundations.

Missionaries for Britain

Written by

Two young Salesians from India are preparing to come to our province as missionaries. They are due to arrive on Monday 28th September 2009.

Fr Cyril Edamana (33) from the Bangalore Province, and Br Jayaraj Mari Arulappan (31) from the Madras (Chennai) Province, spent a month with other missionaries in Rome and Turin as part of the 140th Salesian Missionary Expedition. On Sunday 27th September, in a group of nearly sixty Salesians, Salesian Sisters and lay volunteers, they receive their missionary crosses from the Rector Major in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians.

For many decades Salesian missionaries from the GBR province have been sent to other countries in Africa, India, South America and the Far East. Some died abroad or have now returned, but others are still active in Hong Kong, South Africa, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tunisia and Brazil, among others. Meanwhile the Church has flourished in these mission countries. There are ten Salesian provinces in India, with well over two thousand Salesians, and it is a source of great joy that their generosity will help to bring new life to the provinces of Europe and our own in particular.

Fr Cyril Edamana will be going to our Battersea community in London and will be involved in pastoral work in the Sacred Heart Parish and Salesian College. Br Jayaraj will be going to Savio House to join our youth retreat team, before continuing with his studies in preparation for priestly ordination.

You can read more about the 140th Missionary Expedition on the web site of the Salesian News Agency (ANS). You will also find there a link to the live broadcast of the Mass and the presentation of the missionary crosses.

Retreats in Zambia

Written by

Fr John Dickson SDB writes from Lusaka, September 22nd 2009:

Greetings from the Zambian Provincial, Fr Joseph Czerwinski, who studied in England at Ushaw College and who invited me out here to preach the retreats to the Salesians. Most of the present missionaries came as seminarians 25 years ago. In that short space of time they have established a thriving presence in Zambia itself right across this huge country, but also in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

A unique event took place on September 22nd 2009 at Thornleigh Salesian College Bolton when a team of SDB and lay teachers from Salesian schools in Australia visited the College to reflect together on Salesian education in a secular culture.

The group met the headteacher and senior staff in the school and spent time exploring ways of linking good educational practice to Salesian spirituality. The day ended with a time of sharing and a prayer with the students at Thornleigh.

A Birthday Surprise

Written by

Fr George Robson SDB, parish priest of St Dominic's Huyton, received a pleasant surprise at the celebration of his birthday recently.

Unknown to him, some of his parishioners had commissioned a bust of Don Bosco from the well known Liverpool sculptor, Tom Murphy. He has made statues of John Lennon, Bill Shankley, Harold Wilson, etc, in different parts of Liverpool.
