Bosco Centre at Work

In 1984 Sr. CecilyFMA was asked by the Salesian Sisters to set up youth activities for young people who had very few social opportunities, in Bermondsey. From this a wonderful and comprehensive work has developed in the Bosoc Centre. A thriving and colourful nursery, after school clubs for primary children, evening youth clubs for teenagers and the jewel in the crown the Diomond Project. The centre, situated on Jamaica Road , aims to help as many young people as possible realize their potential by helping them to gain foundations in education on which to build a life career.

The staff are fully dedicated to the individual needs of the young so that nothing can stand in the way of their success. Opportunities exist in the DiamondProject for students to gain qualifications in Maths, English and I.T. as well as growing in socila and personal awareness through Personal Development sessions daily. From this they can move to vocational learning in Youth Work, Administration, Childcare, Art, Sport and I.T. and apprentiships in these vocational areas. There are other ideas for future courses being considered currently. Seeing the youth workers putting their newly acquired skills and learning in practice with young children in after school clubs and with theri peers is inspiring. This project really captures Don Bosco's spirit, giving young people who may not have used their potential in school, another chance to develop and find their rightful place in society. The dedicated staff work together providing the support and expertise needed by each student and adapted to their rhythm of learning and maturity. The centre has a homely feel as had Don Bosco's Oratory in Turin. Provision of facilities for students to socialise and enjoy games is also held in high regard. Don Bosoc said "Education is a matter of the heart.." Anyone visiting the Bosco Centre would see this in action today.
