Today the Salesian Family remembers Blessed Joseph Calasanz Marqués and Henry Saiz Aparicio, priests, with their 93 companions martyrs.

On 22 September occurs the celebration of the  memorial of the martyrs of the Salesian Family in Spain, which reminds us that in the  faith experience and the history of the Church the martyr is a sign of fruitfulness.

There are 95 martyrs: those from Valencia and Barcelona, led by the Provincial  Fr José Calasanz Marques (32); those from Madrid, led by Fr Enrique Saiz Aparicio (42); those of Seville with Fr Luis Torrero (21) at the head. In the group of 95 there are: 39 priests, 25 brothers, 22 clerical students, 2 FMA sisters, 3 Salesian Cooperators (one woman and two men), 2 postulants, a workman and a man attached to the Salesian community.

“As at the beginning of Christianity and while it was first spreading so in our own days the Church has become once again a Church of martyrs.” – comments Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family– “Martyrdom is the participation  in a vital and real way in the sacrifice of Christ, almost a Eucharist. It expresses in a extreme manner that essential and necessary dimension of Christian life that we all have to understand, accept and take up: giving one’s life. Therefore Christian life is always open to the possibility of martyrdom, which can be viewed as a grace offered to us rather than as a goal to be desired or achieved. In addition it represents the most prophetic encounter between the Spirit, grace and the way of life proposed by Christ and what we call the ‘world’ understood as the combination of the powers of evil.”

“Maryrdom, the shedding of blood, as well as the offering of one’s life in daily sacrifice, is an essential aspect of the Salesian spirit. We too are called to count on the matchless assistance of our martyrs to fill with hope our apostolic initiatives and our pastoral efforts in the not always easy task of the new evangelisation. For us too the words should be true: Sanguis martyrum, semen christianorum. The blood of martyrs is the seed of new Christians! We should not be discouraged therefore in the face of difficulties: we are looking to the future in good company!” the Postulator concludes.

coloured fmalogoThe 23rd General Chapter of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians will begin in Rome on the 22nd September after the 194 Chapter members have made a retreat in Mornese, and a pilgrimage to Turin.

During the Chapter the following areas will be considered as well as intense listening to the Spirit present during this important time. There will also be the election of Mother General and her Council. The Chaptere is due to end mid November.

* The real world challenges us - a home to be protected and built; in a constantly changing society; the Church a living presence among the people; young people searching for a home.

* The call to new evangelisation - evangelisation as an encounter with Jesus Christ and life witness; education, a privileged channel for evangelisation.

* Home as a place of encounter and invitation - God lives in our home; Mary, home of the Living God; the Church, a house of communion open to all people.

* Valdocco and Mornese: prophetic sources - communities rooted in the Lord Jesus; a home where one experiences family; a community with a missionary vision.

* What kind of home is needed to evangelise today? - relationships as a way of evangelising education; the environment as a place of encounter and mutuality; together, we respond to deepest needs of young people.

AUG 5th Celebration 2014 106

On the afternoon of 5th August Sisters gathered in Blundellsands for the jubilee celebrations, witnessed the handover of our present Provincial, Sr Pauline Clark, to Sr Connie Cameron who now takes on the mantle of leading the Province for the next six years.

Sr Pauline speaking to the Sisters, expressed her gratitude first to God 'who has been our constant guide and support during the past six years, amazing us all by his gentle but firm leading along difficult and painful paths' then 'to the Sisters of the Province who have given me great trust and love...and as I come to the end of my term, I thank you for your understanding and unfailing support.'

Sr Pauline knows that this same trust and understanding will now be shown to Sr Connie as she begins her service.

A lighted lantern, symbol of the passing on of the leadership was given to Sr Connie by Sr Pauline .

Sr Connie left for Italy on Thursday (7th) where she begins preparations for the General Chapter due to start in September.

We pray for Pauline as she begins a year of various renewal courses.

We pray for Connie as she takes up a challenging role in these days but know that 'the God who started this great work in her will keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish....'

This publication is offered to all who find themselves at home with Salesian spirituality, whatever their Church or faith background. A Salesian Way of Life will find a home with so many people. Whether single or married, in family life or at work, alone or with others, this way of life provokes deeper spiritual reflection on experience. "Those of us who struggle with the busyness of life will find in Salesian spirituality an inner strength awakened through the ordinary events of life."

The way of Don Bosco is therefore an invitation to explore your own spiritual depths, not in the reflections of deep theology but in the daily routines and thought patterns of each day.

It is offered to you as part of our celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Don Bosco."

(Fr Martin Coyle SDB)

Ecover Young Green Champions 2014

Thornleigh Salesian College is proud and delighted to announce that their school charity Mama Margaret’s has won the Ecover Young Green Champion category at The Observer Ethical Awards of 2014

It started with bracelets and took off from there,” says Emma Jones, a Year 9 pupil at Thornleigh Salesian College  in Bolton, the school which runs and founded Mama Margaret’s. Mama Margaret’s is a craft business which supports women in Dagoretti, one of the poorest slums in Nairobi.

It was conceived four years ago when teacher Steve Burrowes was looking for gifts to give to Year 11 leavers. “We’d given bookmarks and all the obvious things before as a memento of the school,” says Burrowes, “but this was the first idea that worked on two levels.”

Having taken part in a youth project in Dagoretti 10 years previously, Burrowes was still in touch with a team developing training and work projects for local women. Many of the women were able to craft simple jewellery, so he asked them if they would be interested in making friendship bracelets that the school could buy and have personalised for the pupils.

We were delighted to pay host recently, to the new Regional of the Centre-North Region, Fr Tadeusz Rozmus SDB.

Fr Tadeusz is on a small 'pilgrimage' (his words!) around a number of the Provinces of the region - taking the opportunity to get to know Confrere and to get an early understanding of the Provinces. He was able to join us for a few days during the Province Retreat in Hothorpe Hall, and travelled to Farnborough, Liverpool and Bolton.

Originally from Poland, he was Provincial of the Krakow Province from 2000 - 2006, before moving to Rome to be Rector of the Community of St Callistus (Catacombs) until 2009. In 2010 he became Rector of the Salesian Community in Perugia (Italy) remaining there until his summons to the General Chapter in March 2014.
