Tragic Death of Patrick Morrissey's grandson

Tragic death of Patrick Morrissey's grandson

Our former National President, Patrick Morrissey, and his family have received the dreadful news that one on his grandchildren died in a car accident today (17th September 2013).

He was being driven to school this morning when his mother's car was struck head-on by another vehicle. Flynn, aged 11, a much-loved grandchild and one of Dominic's sons, died in the crash. His mother and another son in the car

were taken to hospital but are not thought to have serious injuries.

Please remember Flynn and his family in your thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.

Another Football Success

Another Football Success

The Old Salesians (Battersea) Football Club has ended the season at the top of Division 1 of the Southern Amateur League. They clinched their position with a 2-0 win over Old Owens on May 7th.

The Past Pupils won 14 and drew one of their 20 league matches this season, leading their nearest rivals, Old Wilsonians, by five points. They last headed Division 1 in 2004.

Patrick Morrissey, Former National President /Chairman of the Football Club, proudly and rightfully declared: "Having won the Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup last season, and now the Southern Amateur League top Division

Championship; it is arguable that Old Salesians FC are currently one of the strongest club sides in English amateur football."

You can read a fuller report, with several action photographs, on the website of the Southern Amateur League. You can also download a report by John Ward.

Richard Blake update

Richard Blake - Update

John Ward writes:

7/5/2012: "I called Richard today to see how things are going. Richard is managing to keep going. However his chest/lung problems are making him rather tired and breathless. He is still driving, but just locally. I am sure he would

benefit from our continued prayers for an easing of his difficulties."

23/5/2012: "Richard Blake, former Cowley President and National Treasurer, is back in hospital. Marion, Richard's wife, just called me to let me know that she had to call an ambulance on Sunday, as Richard was so very weak. He is

now in the ITU unit at Wexham Hospital. Would you kindly keep Richard and his family in your thoughts and kind prayers, that Richard will soon regain strength and be able to return home."

Don Bosco Day in Ewell

Don Bosco Day at Ewell

On Sunday 29th January 2012, the OSFC/OSSC and OSPFE celebrated Mass in the Clubhouse at Ewell in honour of our Patron Saint.

We were delighted to welcome Fr Charlie Uzoeto and Brother Joseph Tran from the Battersea Community and equally delighted that they were both able to lead the Mass and then play in our Veterans' fixture against St

Agatha's afterwards. Although the match ended in ignominious defeat, we hope they both enjoyed their first taste of life in the OSA, and we also hope and that we will see them wearing the Maroon and Gold once again before too

The match was followed by an excellent selection of refreshments laid on by the ever- faithful band of WAGs, under the stewardship and direction of Diane Morrissey and Mary Ayres, to whom we are always hugely indebted.

Kevin Lawler, Chairman of the OSFC, delivered a reflection on the life of Don Bosco and an overview of our ongoing Mission at Ewell. This was followed by an update of the latest developments regarding the future of our playing fields.

This overview was provided by Kevin Mallett, Chairman of the OSPFE, the limited company set up to run the ground for the next three years.

The annual award of the Brother Herbert Fitzgerald Trophy was then made to the OSFC Salesian of the Year, Ciaran Fitzgibbon. Although not 'a Salesian by birth' Ciaran has been an outstanding member of the Club for the best part of

30 years and he continues to play a vital and active role within the Club in so many ways. It was richly deserved.

Ciaran then oversaw the friendly fixture between a combined team of Ewell Castle School pupils and their Old Boys, against a Salesian Invitation X1. The result was an emphatic 6:2 win for the OSFC, but we hope that the links formed

between Ewell Castle and ourselves over the coming years will prove to be productive and fruitful for us all.

The day then ended in time honoured fashion in the bar with glasses being raised to our Alma Mater and Don Bosco and we look forward to an equally enjoyable celebration in twelve months' time.

Kevin Lawler,

Chairman OSFC
