Fairtrade goes for gold

Written by

Fr Marco Villani, our Justice and Peace Coordinator, recently attended the Fairtrade Conference at King’s College London, and heard about new initiatives, including action to protect gold miners, and resources for schools and youth work.

On Saturday October 7th over two hundred volunteers from around the South East attended an all-day Fairtrade Conference in King’s College London. The event was set up to provide an opportunity for Fairtrade Supporters and delegates to be informed and inspired by the impact that Fairtrade is having on the lives of people in less developed countries.

CAFOD Young Leader training for Salesian students

Written by

PowerToBe CafodYoungLeaders

On Tuesday October 17th, Salesian School Chertsey, Salesian College Farnborough and other schools near and far brought about 60 students to the first of three CAFOD Youth Leadership Training Days. This programme aims to inspire, motivate and equip young people to engage with issues of social justice by nurturing their leadership skills, helping their voice to be heard.

Linked with CAFOD’s latest campaign “Power To Be”, students were informed about this campaign’s drive to press the World Bank to support renewable energy, allowing some of the world’s poorest people to transform their lives through cheap and accessible electricity.

The second Training Day will take place in Farnborough Hill independent girls’ school in Hampshire.

FiveASCSisters MartyrsOfCharity

This weekend, Salesians who served in Liberia during the 1990s are commemorating their friends, the five ASC Sisters from the USA who were killed 25 years ago. St John Paul II declared them Martyrs of Charity. Fr Joe Brown SDB and Br Donald McDonald SDB talk about their memories of the Sisters.

Friendship and support naturally developed between the various Catholic missions ministering to the Liberian people during unsettled and dangerous times, and a monthly day of recollection was hosted at each community house in turn.

Br Donald recalled a delightful custom the Sisters had: 'When you first went in, they got you to sit down and they took a picture of you, and when you looked round, all round the room there were the pictures of everyone we knew.'

Party in the USA - Camp St Francis 2017

CampStFrancis2017 Wednesday

'Crazy Wednesday'

During the summer, Salesian Youth Ministry volunteers Sarah, Anya and David, along with Br Ste Lloyd, went to serve at Camp St Francis, a Salesian summer camp for children, overlooking a Californian beach. David (covered in flour in the photo above) looks back on the experience.

Why are you here? This is not a challenge to you, the reader, it is also not an invitation to give up on this article already - though it might save you a few minutes and spare you any disappointment – rather, it is the question that guided our own reflection time during the hugely successful Camp St Francis season. This is the question that was put to each of the counsellors during the preparation week to help channel our thoughts, and to allow us to bring to mind our own personal reasons for being at camp. It soon became very apparent that a lot of our reasons overlapped, probably as we shared one Salesian spirit, and love of the young with one another. As well as being the thing that inspired us through prep week, it was also the question that we were invited to return to as the weeks went on, reminding ourselves why we were there at camp, especially in the more challenging times.

On the evening of Friday 22nd September, groups of 14-16 year olds from all over the UK headed for Bolton, where Thornleigh Salesian College was again the host venue. After an opening reflection, the fun began with a ceilidh, with music from past pupils of Thornleigh, the Castlemore Ceili Band.
