It's all happening in the 'Heart of Battersea', as our new project in London project gets off to a great start!

Salesian Youth Ministry with Southwark Catholic Youth Service is running a primary school day camp for 60 children, with outreach work and community building, all centred on the Salesian oratory at Battersea. The aim is 'building bridges in the service of the young'.

A Day in the Life of a Salesian School Chaplaincy

Written by

As the new school year begins, follow Fr Jakub Rusniak SDB and the team through a day in the life of the Chaplaincy at Savio Salesian College, Bootle, in this article from the latest issue of Don Bosco Today.

It’s 8 o’clock in the morning and Brother Maciek Sokalkski SDB is just opening the door to the chaplaincy room.

It’s been raining all night and a group of pupils, who have been waiting in the cold for a few minutes now, come into the warmth to watch an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ before the lessons begin. The video club is always fun. Students—especially those dropped off early by their parents—love to spend their time here. It’s their space. They can have their morning toast while enjoying some fun before the lessons begin. Soon after, the children go to meet their tutors and another day starts.

Guiding young adults through complex choices

Written by

Fr David O'Malley SDB explores the complexities of life choices for young adults in an overview of the Salesians' Signposts programme and its aims, published in Don Bosco Today, the UK edition of the Salesian Bulletin.

The facts and stories in this article point to a growing need among young adults to look beyond career and wages to find meaning in their lives and to be happy in what they do. The complexity of choice and the short-term nature of commitments bewilders many young adults. Sometimes they act impulsively, reacting against parental advice and then regret it later. Sometimes they unconsciously do what friends and family want and lose that individual spark that is called vocation.

The missionary heart of the Salesian Family

Written by

Fr Kieran Anderson SDB, Director of the UK Missions Office, traces the Salesians' missionary roots back to Don Bosco and his early dreams, for the Summer 2017 edition of Don Bosco Today.

Throughout his youth and for a couple of years after his ordination in 1841, Don Bosco thought that he might become a missionary priest.

His spiritual director, Saint Joseph Cafasso, allowed Don Bosco to study French and Spanish, but when he started to learn English, he was told outright, “The foreign missions are most certainly not for you! Think about it. You can’t get to the other side of Turin in a closed carriage without becoming travel sick and you want to cross the ocean? My dear Don Bosco, you’d die during the voyage and of that I am sure!”

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Written by

“Give us days of peace, watch over our journey, let us see your Son, filled with the joy of Heaven”

On 15th August,  we mark the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when her body was taken up into Heaven with her soul. But we also think of the end of her earthly life, and we think of her coronation as Queen of Heaven. These scenes have been depicted in Christian art in connection with the Assumption for centuries.

Looking back at Flame 2017

Written by

Flame2017Page 500

In the Summer issue of Don Bosco Today, the UK's Salesian Bulletin, we look back at the amazing Flame 2017 gathering of young Catholics. Our Province is a major supporter of Flame, and the hundreds of young people from Salesian schools and projects attended with their teachers, chaplains, youth leaders, Salesian Sisters and SDBs.

A Catholic youth gathering and a Salesian cardinal both trending on Twitter on the same day. Who’d have thought? Well, to those of us at the SSE Arena at Wembley on Saturday 11th March for Flame 2017, it wasn’t much of a surprise.

New programme gives a taste of Retreat Team Life

A group of four sixth form students formed the very first cohort of the Salesians' Young Adult Programme, designed to offer a taste of life as a volunteer on the Savio retreat team, and an introduction to the skills they’d use and to the Salesian spirituality that underpins it all. They loved their week so much, they stayed on to support the second Phoenix Summer Camp!

Theresa, Chloe, Theo and Moses, who are all about to enter their final year of sixth form, spent a week experiencing Savio House from behind the scenes. The new programme ran alongside this year’s RISE Young Leaders' project and the first week of the Phoenix Summer Camps, to provide them with a taster of the activities they may encounter on the Savio Team.

Fr Kieran Anderson SDB put our (relatively!) new Provincial in the Q&A hot seat for the latest issue of Don Bosco Today, the UK edition of the Salesian Bulletin. Photo (ANS): Fr Gerry with the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime

Q: Can you tell us something about your background: where you grew up, your family, your interests?

A: I grew up in central Scotland, the second eldest of eight children. I am lucky enough to have three brothers and four sisters as well as fourteen nephews and nieces and one grandniece! Family was and is very important to me. I am blessed still to have my parents and enjoyed the security when I was growing up of having grandparents and uncles and aunts around me.

Staff and religious from the Salesians, Jesuits, Assumption Sisters and Columbans joined forces again last week to prepare their new volunteers for overseas service. The group gathered for five days, hosted by the Assumption Sisters at Millaret House, in central London’s Heythrop College, for this year’s Lay Missionary Volunteer Network (LMVN) orientation week, to introduce volunteers to each other, and help them get ready for their challenging but exciting experiences ahead when they leave the get new volunteers ready for their service in other countries.

Spirits can't be dampened at Phoenix Summer Camp

Written by

Last Thursday, I spent a day with the first of the Phoenix Summer Camp groups, as they took a trip to the banks of the River Mersey, near Stockport, for a day of exciting outdoor activities.

At 10:30 on the dot, minibuses arrived at Burnage Rugby Club bringing Year 7 pupils from Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Our Lady's Catholic College, Lancaster; and St James' Catholic High School, Cheadle. Unfortunatley, at 10:35, the blazing sun hid and the rain came down, but the high spirits of the youngsters could not be dampened!
