Fr Andrew Ebrahim SDB, from St John Bosco College, Battersea, writes about a very special event at the college

To mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Sean Devereux, his mother, Maureen Devereux, was invited to speak to all the sixth formers at SJBC. Mrs Devereux's down to earth but warm presentation of the life of her son and what drove him was inspiring to say the least. The sixth formers were completely engrossed by her talk, the video clips of his life and recollections of those who knew him.

In Bolton, staff and Salesians gathered at St Joseph's to say thank you and farewell to Sylvia Hartshorn, who retired this week.

The Epiphany of the Lord

Written by

Epiphany 500

We wish you every blessing on the Feast of the Epiphany

Fr Andrew Ebrahim SDB tells us how Br Ste's first homily contributed to putting SJBC Battersea's new mission statement into action. 'Ruah' is the Hebrew word for 'breath', and its letters stand for the inspriing spirit Don Bosco breathed into his system of working with the young: Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour.

Feast of Blessed Titus Zeman

Written by

 Fr Titus Zeman 1

We celebrate the memorial of Blessed Titus Zeman, the first Slovakian Salesian to be beatified, on 8th January.

In the early 1950s, when religious orders were banned by the Communist government of Czechoslovakia, and many religious were being sent to concentration camps, Blessed Titus organised the escape of young Salesians to Turin, where they could continue their formation. Aware that he risked the death penalty for his actions, he said, “Even if I lose my life I do not consider it a waste, knowing that at least one of those whom I have saved has become a priest to take my place”.

Following his arrest in 1952, he was beaten and tortured, before being tried for treason. He was sentenced to 25 years of hard labour in the harshest of prisons. On his release after 13 years, his health was broken but his spirit was not. He died five years later, on 8th January 1969.

Blessed Titus, pray for us!
