Salesian Youth Ministry - Holy Land 2017

Written by

Last Saturday, a group of 24 young adults set out for the Holy Land, accompanied by Sue McDonald of Salesian Youth Ministry, Fr Jakub and Sr Gill.

The busy itinerary began in Nazareth, and included visits to Capernaum, with Mass on the beach, a renewal of their baptismal promises at the River Jordan, and Mass at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre on the final day. At the end of each day, the Salesian Goodnight was given by a different member of the group.

One particularly powerful experience came in the Garden ofGethsemane, with Fr Jakub celebrating Mass over the Rock of Agony where Jesus prayed to the Father.

The pilgrimage was both a deeply spiritual experience, following in the footsteps of Jesus, and an opportunity to share friendship and have fun in the Salesian tradition.

We wish them a safe journey home, and hope to bring you more on the pilgrimage once everyone has recovered enough to write about it!

Thank you to Sr Gill McCambridge FMA for photos and for social media updates during the week.

Mount of Olives - The Footprints of Jesus, and the Empty Tomb of Our Lady

The Birthplace of Jesus

PentecostSendYrSpiritQu 500

Salesian Cooperator & Lay Chaplain, Jessica Wilkinson, relfects on the joy of Pentecost.

Just because Easter season is drawing to a close doesn’t mean that there isn’t still loads to celebrate!

Do you realise that you, - yes YOU - have been commissioned by Jesus – yes, JESUS! Jesus himself has sent us! Jesus has sent us out into the world to proclaim his love and peace to all. But how can we do this? We don't have to worry about that - because along with that command, Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit.

"Receive the Holy Spirit" he said as he breathed on them in the Gospel and us – every single day of our lives. By receiving the Spirit, the church receives Jesus. This means, that we, - we are the church – receive Jesus' own capacity to make God present, bringing light to the world. In Acts 2:1-11, we hear the effects of the Holy Spirit – that’s not just for those in the upper room that day – they are for us today!

The Ascension of the Lord

Written by

Ascension 2016 500

The bodily ascension of Jesus forty days after he rose from the dead, is a reminder of the eternal life he promised us, and this feast of great hope is important to all Christians.

Traditionally, the feast was celebrated on a Thursday, and the Catholic Church in Scotland and in many other countries still follow the tradition. In England and Wales, however, it is now observed on the following Sunday.

Happy feast!

Br Joe Dao and Fr Francis with two of the new Salesian priests

It's always a delight to hear from Fr Francis Preston SDB in Kenya, but his latest news is especially joyful as he tells us about the recent ordinations of Salesians in Nairobi, and updates us on our friend, Br Joe Dao.

Last week, Brother Joseph Dao made the long journey by road to Nairobi to be present for the priestly ordination of two of his former Vietnamese student companions, Fr Peter and Fr Joseph.  Two other companions who are also working as missionaries  in different parts of Africa were among the 17 students from Don Bosco Utume who were ordained deacons at the same ordination ceremony last Friday at the Salesian Church of Mary Help of Christians in central Nairobi.

Remembering Sr Cecily, one year on

Written by

May 24th was the first anniversary of the death of Sr Cecily Dunn FMA and the Bosco centre gathered to remember her leadership and to dedicate themselves to building on the foundation that she built.

There were about sixty people at the event including members of Cecily's family from Dublin and Scotland. The Salesian Sisters were represented at the celebration by Sr Mary and Sr Mary Louise from Battersea and Sr Pat from Beckenham.

The picture shows Fr David O'Malley blessing tokens of salesian spirituality which are held by Romaine Shilling one of the management team of the Bosco Centre.

Memorial of Bl Joseph Kowalski

Written by

During the Nazi occupation of Poland, the Salesians tried to continue with their education and youth work, despite the ban on non-approved programmes, but on 23rd May 1943, twelve Salesians in Krakow were arrested by the Gestapo.

Fr Józef Kowalski was sent to Auschwitz on 26th June, where he did all he could to encourage his fellow prisoners in Block 25, bringing them spiritual comfort and urging their will to survive; secretly administering the sacraments, talking to them about Don Bosco, and at least once, publicly giving absolution to all of the condemned at a mass execution.

Work for the Salesians at St Joseph's

Written by

Following a recent retirement and restructure, we are seeking four new staff members at St Joseph's, our lovely community house for elderly priests and brothers in Bolton.

We need an experienced cook, and we have now created the exciting new role of Assistant Carer/Housekeeper, and there are three of these posts available.

See our Job Vacancies page for more information and application packs.

As the Salesian Family celebrates the great feast of Mary Help of Christians, the President of the World Confederation of Past Pupils of Don Bosco sends this greeting:

Dear Past Pupils and friends of Don Bosco.

I would like to wish you the blessed feast of Mary Help of Christians.

Today the whole Salesian family celebrates the feast of our patron.

Don Bosco chose Mary Help of Christians as a patron and guard for his

work and his boys. He chose her as a patron also for us.

I encourage You to live Don Bosco´s words also today: Trust to Mary

and You will see the miracles. I believe there are many miracles

prepared for Salesian family.

We have only to trust.
