Older Salesians on Pilgrimage to Portugal
Each year the older Salesians of the GBR province are given the opportunity of taking a holiday together. This year the destination was Fatima and on Wednesday 4th June 2003, a party of 26, including several younger helpers led by Fr Gerry O’Shaughnessy, flew to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
Unfortunately Bro Alan Garman, who had celebrated his 86th birthday the previous day, was taken ill on the plane and had to spend all his time in hospital, being treated for pneumonia. The others were able to travel on by coach to Fatima, where they stayed in a hotel very close to the shrine of Our Lady.
Fr Albert Carette, as usual, brought his camera and he has been kind enough to send the following pictures. There are also some more of Fatima itself!
Some of the group outside the big Salesian school in Estoril. Fr Brian Jerstice met a priest who studied with him in Melchet Court 52 years ago.
The Lisbon Vasco da Gama Bridge - at 17 km one of the longest in Europe. The view is from the roof of the Provincial House in Lisbon.
Down in the playground the school children play a game in preparation for the Feast of Saint Anthony (13th June).
A monument to Don Bosco set up by the Lisbon authorities to celebrate the centenary of the saint’s death. The children are ‘growing’ out of the rocky base and becoming their true selves in the presence of Don Bosco.
