The 16 language groups into which the members of the GC25 divided continued their work this afternoon. Each group was asked to choose three priority points on the basis of the Report on the state of the Congregation in the last six-year period.

From 5.30 to 7.00 p.m. the members returned to the assembly hall for the election of three chairmen. Those elected were Fr Savio Hon, Provincial of Hong Kong, Bro Claudio Marangio of the Piedmontese circumscription, and William John Dickson of the Province of Great Britain. In this way the Presidency of the Chapter has been set up and the members met for the first time later this evening. The three chairmen join the acting President, Fr Antonio Martinelli, and the Moderator, Fr Antonio Domenech, in the Presidency.

The report of the Vicar General on the state of the Congregation and the study of the two precapitular documents, the first on the Salesian community and the second on the verification of the structures of government, were at the centre of the work for today of the Salesians gathered together for the GC25.

In the morning the chapter members were again divided in language groups (now there are 15 not 16 since the two French groups have been combined) to discuss the documents prepared by the precapitular commission, on which in the second half of the afternoon the first interventions were made for the discussion and subsequent approval of the documents. There was only sufficient time for some of the interventions for which advance notice had been given, and discussion will continue tomorrow.

In the first part of the afternoon a synthesis was presented containing the three priorities indicated by each language group based on their experience and concerns starting from the report of the Vicar General.

From the synthesis the following priorities emerged: the religious identity of the Salesian community was highlighted by nine groups. The care of vocations and the guidance of young Salesians was also highlighted by nine groups. Animation by the rector and the leadership for the ongoing formation of the community, but also of the EPC, the Salesian Family and the youngsters was chosen by five groups. The significance of the mission by a return to a presence among the young in which the community aspect of the mission is developed and in which there is a more effective balance between the human resources available and the work to be undertaken was mentioned by eight groups.
