 Sr Nancy Pereira

Golden AppleThe Marisa Bellisario Foundation of Italy has chose Sister Nancy Pereira FMA for the GOLDEN APPLE AWARD (Premio Mela d'Oro) in recognition of her outstanding service to the poor in Bangalore India.

"It is a token of appreciation for proving that great things can be done with few means, little energy but with GREAT LOVE"

The FIDES Project

(Family Integral Development Education Scheme).

The Fides Project has been in operation for six years now. It has benefited 3000 families in ten villages. This plan was born of Sister Nancy's enterprising spirit and apostolic passion. She sustains it with the help of various European humanitarian organisations. Many friends and benefactors also share in the dream of making it possible for 3000 families to earn enough to improve their social condition, to be able to save and set up their own little business.

With the help of the Dutch Caritas, Sister Nancy set up a credit union for the benefit of poor families. Money is loaned to the families at only 1% interest. After a training period the families are able to set up family mini-companies, which allow them to earn their living and save money so as to improve their social and economic position. They take part in projects such as the rearing of pigs, rabbits, fish, cultivation of gardens, making bricks.. The novelty lies in the initial loans. The other banks charge very high interest rates and the people, who are already poor, are not in a position to earn and save at the same time. This method instead encourages personal initiative and offers the poor the means of redeeming themselves from poverty and misery.

Sister Anna and Sister Constance are nurses. They help Sister Nancy in the health and nutritional training of young mothers and small children. Their day, like that of the social assistants, is passed listening to people and promoting unborn life. Extremely poor and disadvantaged living conditions lead to a very high level of infant mortality. Sister Anna and Sister Constance specialise in a preventive medicine for expectant mothers, and provide a follow-up programme once the children are born. Mothers are invited to the centre to learn the rules of hygiene for breast feeding, weaning and the early education of their children.

The centre also offers the possibility of following courses in dressmaking and embroidery using the precious Indian silk. Sister Nancy's aim is to start from the situation in which the people live. For her and her helpers it is therefore important to know the real stories hidden behind the smiles and gentleness of the Indian soul. Weekly programming and evaluation are two ways that the project uses to constantly refine and perfect its medium term goals. This is a mission "on the go" Sister Nancy and her team know this is important because it is along the roads that the men women and children of India are to be met. The FIDES Project welcomes Christians, Hindus and Muslims. It is open to receive and share with everyone as long as the centrality of the person and their dignity is respected.

A House in the City

Sister Nancy's heart excludes no one.  The money she collected has made it possible for her province to buy a house in the centre of Bangalore to offer hospitality to girls coming into the city in search of work and wealth. The phenomenon of the street children is on the increase and there is an ever growing risk of their becoming caught up in the international web of prostitution. It is therefore necessary to offer them shelter and much affection. Sisters Nancy, Agnes and Anna know how to welcome the young people who wander the nameless streets. They come from the villages, drawn by the dream of easily becoming film or TV actresses. The train and bus stations are strategic points. It is not enough just to welcome them, they need to be educated and, often, re-educated and to have their faith in life rekindled. There are 18 girls living in community with the sisters in a temporary apartment. Some of them attend our school and have chosen not to return to the street.
