Twenty Eighth Vocations Pilgrimage
In 1976 Fr Eric Darwell (RIP) conceived the idea of a Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham specifically to pray for vocations to the Priesthood and the Religious Life. He sent his invitation to those involved with the Caring Church weeks ‘I am going to Walsingham. Will you come?’
This year Fr Peter Preston of the Salvatorians sent out the same invitation and on Saturday 19th June several hundred responded.
The pilgrims walked the ‘holy mile’ from the Catholic Church in the centre of Walsingham village to the Catholic Shrine near the ‘Slipper Chapel’, praying the rosary and singing hymns.
The Mass in the Chapel of Reconciliation was led by Fr Alex Saba, a priest from Togo now based in the parish of the Holy Innocents in Orpington. In his homily Deacon James Burleigh, who was at Shrigley with the young Eric Darwell, paid warm tribute to the Salesians, who were represented by Fr Francis Preston, Fr Pat Sherlock and Mrs Maddy Brown, coordinator of the Bollington Salesian Cooperators.
