Ecover Young Green Champions 2014

Written by

Thornleigh Salesian College is proud and delighted to announce that their school charity Mama Margaret’s has won the Ecover Young Green Champion category at The Observer Ethical Awards of 2014

MamaMLogo

It started with bracelets and took off from there,” says Emma Jones, a Year 9 pupil at Thornleigh Salesian College  in Bolton, the school which runs and founded Mama Margaret’s. Mama Margaret’s is a craft business which supports women in Dagoretti, one of the poorest slums in Nairobi.

It was conceived four years ago when teacher Steve Burrowes was looking for gifts to give to Year 11 leavers. “We’d given bookmarks and all the obvious things before as a memento of the school,” says Burrowes, “but this was the first idea that worked on two levels.”

Having taken part in a youth project in Dagoretti 10 years previously, Burrowes was still in touch with a team developing training and work projects for local women. Many of the women were able to craft simple jewellery, so he asked them if they would be interested in making friendship bracelets that the school could buy and have personalised for the pupils.

SHORT VISIT OF THE REGIONAL

Written by

We were delighted to pay host recently, to the new Regional of the Centre-North Region, Fr Tadeusz Rozmus SDB.

Fr Tadeusz is on a small 'pilgrimage' (his words!) around a number of the Provinces of the region - taking the opportunity to get to know Confrere and to get an early understanding of the Provinces. He was able to join us for a few days during the Province Retreat in Hothorpe Hall, and travelled to Farnborough, Liverpool and Bolton.

Originally from Poland, he was Provincial of the Krakow Province from 2000 - 2006, before moving to Rome to be Rector of the Community of St Callistus (Catacombs) until 2009. In 2010 he became Rector of the Salesian Community in Perugia (Italy) remaining there until his summons to the General Chapter in March 2014.

48th WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS

Written by

Pope Francis has prepared a special message for the occasion on the theme "Communication at the service of an authentic culture of encounter." In it he exhorts the faithful not to fear the media, but to use them to show their closeness and love.

RMwithMary

In preparation for the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major, has written a letter to the Salesian Family. In addition to prayers and good wishes, it also includes a strong pastoral and social message. He calls for a new style of pastoral ministry, based on a "revolution of tenderness". We include some excerpts from the letter.

The Rector Major has already made a few visits to the Salesian Provinces , in which he has seen " evidence of the multitude of exciting projects where God, with a few loaves and a few fish, constantly multiplies our action and causes the poor works of our hands to blossom."

Regarding the present social situation, Fr Fernandez Artime comments: "Just in these days we've received awful news of the persecution of Christians in many parts of the world, of violations of human rights in critical areas of the planet, of the mistreatment and kidnapping of minors on account of their being female or of their religion. Nothing is further from God's plan! The presence of the Risen Lord lights up the darkness; he is peace that melts away fear."

New Book from Don Bosco Publications

Written by

Don Bosco Publications have released a new book by Fr Michael Cunningham SDB

AConnectedLife

A Connected Life - Mystical Christianity for Today

Description

There is, in all of us, a homing device that calls us to our deepest centre, the core of our being, what we call the soul. It is not easy to define the word soul; in fact it is impossible but there are times in our lives when we feel the need to connect with this spiritual centre of our being. This is what I am trying to describe in this short book. I am not an original thinker but I have tried, however inadequately, to point to some of the exciting writers who are exploring this territory. What is commonly agreed is that there is a profound experience of connection at the core of our being. This has always been the case but today we are experiencing a revolution in human experience. We live in a period of time when global connection is a fact as well as a dream. We are connected electronically, economically and politically. If we neglect the deepest connection at the level of our souls – that we are one with God, one with others, and one with creation – our technical connections alone will not satisfy our deepest longings and hunger.

This book has a special launch price of £5 till the end of April where it will go up to £7

You can order it through the shop on the website or by visiting www.don-bosco-publications.co.uk
