Our Salesian Youth Ministry (SYM) team is developing a new summer camp project which will offer much-needed breaks to young refugees and asylum seekers aged 14-17, and they need your support. Watch the video below.

The Valdocco Project is inspired by our Salesian charism and named after the place where Don Bosco first gave hope and joy to excluded young people. It's a response to Pope Francis' calls for compassion towards those seeking sanctuary, and to "recognise and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and most vulnerable." The project has also been shaped by the Rector Major's request to the Salesian family in Europe to seek practical ways to offer assistance in the refugee crisis, paying “particular attention to unaccompanied minors and young people".

Lent reflection - The parish is led to Passiontide

Written by

 StrennaFrsPeterGrahamPurple

In the penultimate week of Lent, the Rector Major considers the heart of the Salesian spirit, in the rich network of relationships we form in our lives, and Fr Graham Forristalle looks at holiness in a parish preparing for the holiest time of the year.

Each Lenten Friday evening in Cowley, the people of the parish gather in the church for 6pm. Altar servers have come to join us, and together we follow the Way of the Cross. In the fourteen stations the family of the parish meditate on Jesus who suffered and gave his life for us all. This family has members from Latvia, from Malawi, from Goa, East Timor and Poland: from Brittany and from all parts of Europe. We are praying in English: whether this is our first or second language we acclaim the one saviour, and the image and pattern of his sacrifice is our pattern of holiness. In one scripture during the Stations, we read about the paradox within Jesus’ sacrifice. “For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

We are pleased to announce our 2019 RISE leadership summer project, and we will train fifteen Yr10/11s during the project at Savio House, from Sunday 21st - Friday 26th July 2019.

We have begun to look at a fantastic programme, and as we are now in our 4th year, we know how popular this project is, so we are asking all schools to start planning and to register young people as soon as possible. The form can be dowloaded from this page.

We are asking you to make the first contact with your young leaders and invite them to take part in this initiative. The young people do not need accompanying to this project, so you only have to plant the seed!

If your Yr10s took part last year, they are more than welcome to return - the programme runs over a two year cycle. If you have young leaders in Yrs 12/13 keep watch for the project for them.

Please do not leave this too late, as we had to turn young people away last year. We are restricted to 15 places so that the volunteers are able to accompany the young on their journey. We ask that no more than 3 young people from your area attend, as this enhances the group dynamics.

If you have any questions or difficulties please do not hesitate to ask us. Contact sue@salesianyouthministry.org.uk

Thank you,

RISE Team 2019

Written by

SYMEURGBRCrGp

Sue McDonald, Animator of Salesian Youth Ministry in the GBR Province, shares news and thoughts from the recent General Assembly of the Salesian Youth Movement Europe (SYM Europe).

Last last weekend, I went along to Brussels to take part in the SYM Europe General Assembly as SDB delegate, together with the SDB representatives for our Province, Daniel Antonio and Chloe Ceairns.  The FMA from GBR also sent their delegate, Sr Anne Frances, and a representative, Rebecca Hargreaves.. Last year we hosted the assembly at Savio House so this year we were not given any tasks to do in preparation.

The Mission statement of Savio House talks about the Community celebrating God’s presence in all people – particularly the young . . .

Sunday 7th October, 2018 saw the coming together of the Savio House Community for their annual Mass of Commitment, the spiritual beginnings of their time together at Savio House, for the school year 2018-2019.

The Mass was celebrated by Fr Gerry Briody SDB, Provincial – and in the presence of the Rector, Fr Martin Coyle SDB and the Salesian Community, family and friends the prayer of commitment was read by the entire group.

Fr Gerry, whilst offering the new Team Leader, Jonny Dearden every blessing and good wish for the year, took the opportunity to present him with a signed copy of the Savio House Mission statement.

After the Service, an excellent buffet was offered to all by the House.

The work of Savio House is of great importance in the Salesian Mission of the British Province, and we send them our thoughts and prayers on this special occasion.

Please keep the Savio community and the young people they will serve this year in your prayers too.

BOVA volunteer Joe writes about how his experience in India is helping him discern his vocation to the priesthood

For as long as I can remember I have had an inexplicable desire to be a priest. This desire is not something that comes from me, it is not something I want to do; it is something I feel called to do. For a long time, I supressed that calling, instead, aspiring to a more 'normal' life: school, university and married life like a 'normal' person. It was only when faced with the reality of university – looking up courses, visiting campuses, going on open days – that I realised that this really was not what I wanted to do and that I could not happily pursue such a life. And so, having already accepted to study in Derby, I withdrew my application and entered into a 'gap year'.

That gap year has now become two years of 'gap' and I have no regrets. At first, to my mother's dismay, I had no idea what I was planning to do. I knew I wanted to pursue my vocation to enter the priesthood and that I wanted to enter seminary but I felt I wanted more time to discern my calling before making any formal steps. I planned to volunteer with a Catholic organisation as I knew I wanted to spend some time in a religious environment, growing in spirituality and discerning, but also putting into action my faith and doing something proactive. I wanted somewhere far from home, completely outside of my normal life, somewhere I could pursue my faith and vocation unhindered.

EasterRetreatY13Plus2018

Our Easter Retreat for those aged 17 and over will take place from 29th March - 1st April at Savio House. The cost is £55 per person.

Only 25 places are available, and this is a popular and deeply rewarding event, so please contact Sue McDonald as soon as possible if you are interested.
