New programme gives a taste of Retreat Team Life

Written by

A group of four sixth form students formed the very first cohort of the Salesians' Young Adult Programme, designed to offer a taste of life as a volunteer on the Savio retreat team, and an introduction to the skills they’d use and to the Salesian spirituality that underpins it all. They loved their week so much, they stayed on to support the second Phoenix Summer Camp!

Theresa, Chloe, Theo and Moses, who are all about to enter their final year of sixth form, spent a week experiencing Savio House from behind the scenes. The new programme ran alongside this year’s RISE Young Leaders' project and the first week of the Phoenix Summer Camps, to provide them with a taster of the activities they may encounter on the Savio Team.

Spirits can't be dampened at Phoenix Summer Camp

Last Thursday, I spent a day with the first of the Phoenix Summer Camp groups, as they took a trip to the banks of the River Mersey, near Stockport, for a day of exciting outdoor activities.

At 10:30 on the dot, minibuses arrived at Burnage Rugby Club bringing Year 7 pupils from Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Our Lady's Catholic College, Lancaster; and St James' Catholic High School, Cheadle. Unfortunatley, at 10:35, the blazing sun hid and the rain came down, but the high spirits of the youngsters could not be dampened!

Out this week, the latest book from Don Bosco Publications is a retelling of the life of Don Bosco especially for children aged 7 - 12, written by Rosa Navarro Durán, beautifully illustrated by Jordi Vila Delclòs, and translated from the original Spanish by Josie Bland.

Youth and hope at SYLC California

Written by

SYLC USA 2017

Salesian Youth Ministry volunteers David, Anya and Sarah are in the USA, about to begin work at Camp St Francis, a Salesian children's camp located on the Californian coast. David and Anya arrived in time for part of the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC). David sent some thoughts on the experience so far, and will keep us updated as their summer mission continues.

Get up, get out, do good! This was the message that the Holy Father, Pope Francis left for our young people last summer during World Youth Day, in Krakow. This was also the theme for the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference this past week.

Anya and myself were lucky enough to join the conclusion of this week, as part of our summer mission in the American Western coast province. With Camp St Francis not starting for another few days yet, being able to reflect on the time we have spent here already is incredible.

Salesian Youth Ministry - Holy Land 2017

Written by

HolyLand2017Group

Last Saturday, a group of 24 young adults set out for the Holy Land, accompanied by Sue McDonald of Salesian Youth Ministry, Fr Jakub and Sr Gill.

The busy itinerary began in Nazareth, and included visits to Capernaum, with Mass on the beach, a renewal of their baptismal promises at the River Jordan, and Mass at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre on the final day. At the end of each day, the Salesian Goodnight was given by a different member of the group.

One particularly powerful experience came in the Garden ofGethsemane, with Fr Jakub celebrating Mass over the Rock of Agony where Jesus prayed to the Father.

The pilgrimage was both a deeply spiritual experience, following in the footsteps of Jesus, and an opportunity to share friendship and have fun in the Salesian tradition.

We wish them a safe journey home, and hope to bring you more on the pilgrimage once everyone has recovered enough to write about it!

Thank you to Sr Gill McCambridge FMA for photos and for social media updates during the week.

We're almost half way through another busy year, and there are lots of events peeping over the horizon in the months to come. Look out for news and photos! Here's a bit of a run-down:

Our pilgrimage to the Holy Land begins in just a few days, from 27th May to 3rd June. We have 24 young adults in the group; all the preparations are now complete, and the excitement is mounting! Please keep us in prayer, and we will be praying for everyone at home, especially the Salesian Family, as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

New Salesian Youth Project needs volunteers

Written by

HeartOfBatterseaProjectPoster

Salesian Youth Ministry is seeking 24 volunteers for an exciting new summer project in Battersea, running from 18-27th August 2017.

Poster for Rise 2017

The RISE event aims to gather up to twenty young people who are leaving year 10 or 11 for a five day project for young leaders, a fun filled week including workshops in communication skills, teamwork skills and youth work skills.

The programme will run from 6pm on the 24th July until 4pm on the 28th July, at Savio House in Bollington (near Macclesfield). It is being organised by the Salesian Youth Ministry Team.

Young people can make their own way to Macclesfield station where we will collect them (or alternatively they can arrange someone to drop them off at Savio House). To cover the costs of food, accommodation and outings we are asking only £99 per head (the project is being subsidised by the Salesians).

We hope through this week to develop Salesian young leaders by giving young people a chance to build skills which they can use in the future. We are therefore asking if you could identify any young people who have displayed leadership qualities (at school and/or local community). You can download an invitaion letter to give to your young people below, together with the registration form.
