BOVA volunteer Joe writes about how his experience in India is helping him discern his vocation to the priesthood

For as long as I can remember I have had an inexplicable desire to be a priest. This desire is not something that comes from me, it is not something I want to do; it is something I feel called to do. For a long time, I supressed that calling, instead, aspiring to a more 'normal' life: school, university and married life like a 'normal' person. It was only when faced with the reality of university – looking up courses, visiting campuses, going on open days – that I realised that this really was not what I wanted to do and that I could not happily pursue such a life. And so, having already accepted to study in Derby, I withdrew my application and entered into a 'gap year'.

That gap year has now become two years of 'gap' and I have no regrets. At first, to my mother's dismay, I had no idea what I was planning to do. I knew I wanted to pursue my vocation to enter the priesthood and that I wanted to enter seminary but I felt I wanted more time to discern my calling before making any formal steps. I planned to volunteer with a Catholic organisation as I knew I wanted to spend some time in a religious environment, growing in spirituality and discerning, but also putting into action my faith and doing something proactive. I wanted somewhere far from home, completely outside of my normal life, somewhere I could pursue my faith and vocation unhindered.

The 13th General Assembly of the Salesian Youth Movement of Europe (SYM) took place from 17 to 19 November. The meeting was held at Savio House in Bollington, Great Britain. This year's annual SYM Europe event was attended by 55 representatives from 14 European countries.

140 years ago this week, the first Salesian Sisters' missionary expedition set out from the port of Genoa, Italy. Here's how the Sisters marked the occasion in Genoa.

On November 14, 2017, the provincial community and the directors of the Province of “ Madonna del Buon Consiglio” of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) met before the ancient port of Genoa on a barge near the famous Aquarium to commemorate a historical date: November 14, 1877, the day that led the FMA beyond the borders of Europe, transposing the charism of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello to the Americas.

Party in the USA - Camp St Francis 2017

'Crazy Wednesday'

During the summer, Salesian Youth Ministry volunteers Sarah, Anya and David, along with Br Ste Lloyd, went to serve at Camp St Francis, a Salesian summer camp for children, overlooking a Californian beach. David (covered in flour in the photo above) looks back on the experience.

Why are you here? This is not a challenge to you, the reader, it is also not an invitation to give up on this article already - though it might save you a few minutes and spare you any disappointment – rather, it is the question that guided our own reflection time during the hugely successful Camp St Francis season. This is the question that was put to each of the counsellors during the preparation week to help channel our thoughts, and to allow us to bring to mind our own personal reasons for being at camp. It soon became very apparent that a lot of our reasons overlapped, probably as we shared one Salesian spirit, and love of the young with one another. As well as being the thing that inspired us through prep week, it was also the question that we were invited to return to as the weeks went on, reminding ourselves why we were there at camp, especially in the more challenging times.

New programme gives a taste of Retreat Team Life

A group of four sixth form students formed the very first cohort of the Salesians' Young Adult Programme, designed to offer a taste of life as a volunteer on the Savio retreat team, and an introduction to the skills they’d use and to the Salesian spirituality that underpins it all. They loved their week so much, they stayed on to support the second Phoenix Summer Camp!

Theresa, Chloe, Theo and Moses, who are all about to enter their final year of sixth form, spent a week experiencing Savio House from behind the scenes. The new programme ran alongside this year’s RISE Young Leaders' project and the first week of the Phoenix Summer Camps, to provide them with a taster of the activities they may encounter on the Savio Team.

Spirits can't be dampened at Phoenix Summer Camp

Written by

Last Thursday, I spent a day with the first of the Phoenix Summer Camp groups, as they took a trip to the banks of the River Mersey, near Stockport, for a day of exciting outdoor activities.

At 10:30 on the dot, minibuses arrived at Burnage Rugby Club bringing Year 7 pupils from Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Our Lady's Catholic College, Lancaster; and St James' Catholic High School, Cheadle. Unfortunatley, at 10:35, the blazing sun hid and the rain came down, but the high spirits of the youngsters could not be dampened!
