Whirlwind of a weekend for Salesian Youth Ministry

This weekend, the youth ministry department held the 2nd meeting of the year for our Salesian animators. We began with an input and sharing session on the preparation document for XV General Assembly of the Ordinary Synod of Bishops taking place in October 2018. The theme for this Assembly will be “Young people, faith and vocational discernment.”

After this our time was spent preparing for the next 6 months of mission. We will be engaged in the following ministry:

Young adult Easter retreat at Savio
Training and hosting young animators from Don Bosco Youth Net
Pilgrimage to Jerusalem
Camp St Francis LA
2 weeks of Phoenix holidays yr 7
1 week of RISE leadership yrs 10/11
Attending Confronto with the FMA
10 day Battersea outreach project
MAKE SOME NOISE national youth gather
Hosting the European Salesian Youth Movement general assembly
Christmas project for yr 7/8

The energy of the day of preparation was great and it is always humbling to see so much enthusiasm for the spirituality when we get together. With the usual animators we also opened the weekend to past RISE participants. They were insightful at the reflection on the theme of the assembly and took part in preparation for this year’s RISE. They had a break in the afternoon and went bowling but were back to sign up for projects in the evening. Fr Bob, youth ministry delegate also joined us for the weekend and celebrated Mass as the day came to a close.

In the evening a newly formed group – Youth Ministry Vision Team - met for the first time together. This group was set up by invitation from the provincial and will among other things offer support to Sue.

The next morning the group who are off to Jerusalem came together for a day to get to know each other, look at the timetable and security. The group will be 24 people from a variety of Salesian backgrounds, SDB/FMA/youth ministry/schools/past volunteers and indeed two present Savio volunteers. It was a successful day and I look forward to our pilgrimage.

As that closed another meeting opened – this time in preparation for young adult Easter at Savio. The retreat is almost full with 34 retreatants signed up. Fr Bob will be the chaplain for this retreat running from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday.

Finally at 6pm Sue and Fr Bob could sign a breath of relief but also end with a sense of awe and amazement at the generosity of all involved. Watch this space for reflections on how these and more are lived out in the coming months.

If you are interested in getting involved please email sue@salesianyouthministry.org.uk for more information.
