Don Bosco Day at Ewell

On Sunday 29th January 2012, the OSFC/OSSC and OSPFE celebrated Mass in the Clubhouse at Ewell in honour of our Patron Saint.

We were delighted to welcome Fr Charlie Uzoeto and Brother Joseph Tran from the Battersea Community and equally delighted that they were both able to lead the Mass and then play in our Veterans' fixture against St

Agatha's afterwards. Although the match ended in ignominious defeat, we hope they both enjoyed their first taste of life in the OSA, and we also hope and that we will see them wearing the Maroon and Gold once again before too

The match was followed by an excellent selection of refreshments laid on by the ever- faithful band of WAGs, under the stewardship and direction of Diane Morrissey and Mary Ayres, to whom we are always hugely indebted.

Kevin Lawler, Chairman of the OSFC, delivered a reflection on the life of Don Bosco and an overview of our ongoing Mission at Ewell. This was followed by an update of the latest developments regarding the future of our playing fields.

This overview was provided by Kevin Mallett, Chairman of the OSPFE, the limited company set up to run the ground for the next three years.

The annual award of the Brother Herbert Fitzgerald Trophy was then made to the OSFC Salesian of the Year, Ciaran Fitzgibbon. Although not 'a Salesian by birth' Ciaran has been an outstanding member of the Club for the best part of

30 years and he continues to play a vital and active role within the Club in so many ways. It was richly deserved.

Ciaran then oversaw the friendly fixture between a combined team of Ewell Castle School pupils and their Old Boys, against a Salesian Invitation X1. The result was an emphatic 6:2 win for the OSFC, but we hope that the links formed

between Ewell Castle and ourselves over the coming years will prove to be productive and fruitful for us all.

The day then ended in time honoured fashion in the bar with glasses being raised to our Alma Mater and Don Bosco and we look forward to an equally enjoyable celebration in twelve months' time.

Kevin Lawler,

Chairman OSFC
