Faith and Joy at our World Youth Day at Home

Fr Jakub, Chaplain of Savio Salesian College Bootle, writes about attending our home-grown celebration

World Youth Day at Panama was one of the most exciting events for the youth who wanted to explore their faith and connect with other like-minded people. Travel to another continent can be however a bit of a challenge because of various commitments at school and at home. But for those kinds of people, the Salesian Sisters of the UK prepared something very special this year – “World Youth Day at Home”. Together with a group of students from Savio Salesian College we decided to take part in this exciting event which was a great way to join in the events happening at Panama while remaining in UK.

Our local event took place at Barnstondale Activity Centre on the Wirral. Working with a number of Salesian volunteers, the Salesian Sisters prepared a programme full of memorable moments and surprises. From ice-breaker games, workshops run by invited guests to testimonies, moments of prayer and reflection, fair rides and the celebration Mass at the end – World Youth Day at Home had everything one could hope for and more!

But perhaps the most enjoyable thing was the family atmosphere and the sense of community. Participants arrived from all across the country – south and north. Different schools and centres –all united in the same Salesian Spirit and joy of sharing the time together. Something that Don Bosco and Mary Mazarello would definitely be very proud of!

World Youth Day at Home was a definitely a highlight and something that we will remember for a long time!

And URSpace Glasgow added:

"On the last morning, Fr Stephen asked us where we have seen and touched God this weekend: in each and every young person who took part, in the generosity and joy of the staff who accompanied them and in the faith, spirit and goodness of the OUTSTANDING team who organised it. Thank you all - it was an amazing experience - to now be lived in our everyday lives."
