Sharing publishing ideas in Munch

PublishersmeetingMunich 2019a

Sarah Seddon, Manager of Don Bosco Publications, and Fr Bob Gardner, Delegate for Publications and Social Media, were in Munich this week to represent the British Province at at the biennial meeting of the European Don Bosco Publishing houses, hosted at the Munich Salesianum.

Stefan Höchstädter, Managing Director of the Don Bosco Verlag in Munich, said it was an excellent opportunity to get to know what everyone in Salesian publishing is doing, and also “to show them our work here in Munich with the strong connection to the young people on Campus Don Bosco, that combines different Salesian institutions next to our publishing house, like our group homes for apprentices.”

Last weekend, Adam Ditchburn, a volunteer at Savio House in 2006, launched his first collection of poetry, As the Crow Flies, at an event at Hull Library, in his home town.

Adam, pictured above with his wife and children, has been writing and performing songs in the UK and USA for several years, but the book, published as part of Don Bosco Publications' Pocketbook series, marks a shift of his writing focus towards poetry and prose.

While she was on holiday in The Gambia, Sarah Seddon, Manager of Don Bosco Publications, took the opportunity to visit the country’s recently established Salesian mission, with some gifts from our Province.

On Monday March 18, I took a break from relaxing in the sun to pay a visit to a new Salesian community the small Manjago village of Kunkujang Mariama in The Gambia. I took with me a case of Don Bosco Publications' books to help with the Salesian mission there. Travelling off the tourist trail to a little village in the middle of the African bush can be rather daunting, but I received a warm Salesian welcome and was immediately put at ease.

Accompanying the Young in a Quest for meaning: Reflections on Salesian Spiritual Companionship

Louis Grech SDB's new book on accompanying young people has been launched by Don Bosco Publications just in time for next weekend's seminars presented by the author on the same topic.

The book provides a well-researched and fascinating grounding in Don Bosco's unique approach to spiritual companionship and its contemporary context, and practical guidance on using the approach today, from a current practitioner.

The book considers the wider topics of human spirituality and whether children are 'born spiritual', and how far Don Bosco influenced the way the Church viewed child holiness, and looks at what today's Salesians and youth workers can learn from Don Bosco's experience.

Spiritual reading for Lent

DBPLent2019Books 500

Lent isn't just about giving things up. It's a fruitful time to develop our spiritual practices, or begin new habits of prayer and study. A well-chosen book or two can be of great assistance in this, and Don Bosco Publications has a range of titles suited to the season.

Two books from Fr Michael Winstanley SDB are valuable companions for those who want to deepen their faith and understanding during Lent. Lenten Sundays surveys the Sunday Gospels from all three Liturgical Cycles, looking at the historical context, the essence of each story, and how it fits into the life of Jesus, and how we can apply its message in our lives today.  His latest book, Alive!, steps beyond Lent and explores the resurrection narratives, preparing us to welcome the risen Christ by grasping what it is to be fully 'alive' as Christians.

We also have books to enrich the Lenten experience of children and young people. Our Swatch Journey Through Lent is a prayer resource book for young people, containing a range of activities and simple reflections which can be used in groups and families, or individually. The Life of Jesus: A Colouring Book is a way of helping small children engage with the stories of the passion and resurrection in an age-appropriate manner.
