Bells ring out again at St James' Bootle

BellRinger 500

by Fr Jim McGarry SDB

In the tower of St James’ Church, Bootle, there are ten bells. They have not been used in seven years because of the condition of the tower.

One of the bells, the largest, is the original tolling bell, known as “Big Tom”. There are nine other bells were cast in 1924 at the O’Byrne Foundry, Dublin, to form a peal. Inscribed on the largest of the nine bells are the words: “This peal of bells is erected to the memory of the late Canon Kelly, for 37 years Rector of St James’s, RIP”. The remaining eight bells have a name inscribed on each one: Our Lady of Lourdes, St Bernadette, St James, St Joseph, St Patrick, St Anthony, The Little Flower, and Gemma Galgani.

Mass on Sunday was a very special one at St James' Bootle, as the young people of the parish were at the centre of the National Youth Sunday Mass.

Fr Jakub Rusniak SDB said, "On this day, we celebrate the young people in our parish and community and all the gifts and talents they share with us".

St Anne's Chertsey's year of celebrations continues, as described by Joy Mowatt.

As part of the 90th celebrations of St Anne's, Chertsey, there was a pilgrimage to Lourdes organised by Ken and Barbara Greaney. Both are long-standing Cooperators, and they took a group of parishoners, most or all of whom are also Cooperators, to Lourdes to pray for the Parish at this special time.

This Year, St Anne’s, Chertsey, is celebrating 90 years as a Parish church. We have a year-long programme of events to mark the occasion and on the 3rd Sunday of Lent we took part in a “Feed the Hungry” packing event. This charity supplies meals to those most in need and our efforts were being sent to children in Burkina Faso and flood victims in Zimbabwe.

In the penultimate week of Lent, the Rector Major considers the heart of the Salesian spirit, in the rich network of relationships we form in our lives, and Fr Graham Forristalle looks at holiness in a parish preparing for the holiest time of the year.

Each Lenten Friday evening in Cowley, the people of the parish gather in the church for 6pm. Altar servers have come to join us, and together we follow the Way of the Cross. In the fourteen stations the family of the parish meditate on Jesus who suffered and gave his life for us all. This family has members from Latvia, from Malawi, from Goa, East Timor and Poland: from Brittany and from all parts of Europe. We are praying in English: whether this is our first or second language we acclaim the one saviour, and the image and pattern of his sacrifice is our pattern of holiness. In one scripture during the Stations, we read about the paradox within Jesus’ sacrifice. “For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
