Prayer & a Pint and our plans

SYMPrayerAndPintGroup 500

We had 10 people sign in for prayer and a pint on our first session last Friday, and so far, seven more have asked to be involved this week - even Australia is going to join for 'prayer and breakfast' at the same time.

We are planning more online ministry activities for Holy Week and for after Easter, so if you're on FB, make sure you 'like' our page to keep up to date, or keep watching here for new announcements.

To take part this week or in future, get a free Zoom acccount here: https://zoom.us/signup and email sue@salesianyouthministry.org.uk or message our @symonlineoratory Facebook page for a meeting invite.

Salesian pilgrims in the Holy Land

HolyLand2019GpDay1 500

Our Salesian Youth Ministry pilgrims are coming to the end of their time in the Holy Land. The group of 23, which includes teachers and lay chaplains, priests and brothers, began their journey in Nazaereth, praying and reflecting at the site of the Annunciation on how as Salesians we can bring Jesus into the lives of those we serve in our schools, parishes, chaplaincies and youth work.

WorldRefugeeNonUniformValdocco 2019

Salesian Youth Ministry is asking Salesian and associate schools to hold a 'non-uniform day' fundraiser on World Refugee Day, 20th June, in support of its new Valdocco in Britain project, which aims to give a summer break to young refugees and asylum seekers.

Our Salesian Youth Ministry (SYM) team is developing a new summer camp project which will offer much-needed breaks to young refugees and asylum seekers aged 14-17, and they need your support. Watch the video below.

The Valdocco Project is inspired by our Salesian charism and named after the place where Don Bosco first gave hope and joy to excluded young people. It's a response to Pope Francis' calls for compassion towards those seeking sanctuary, and to "recognise and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and most vulnerable." The project has also been shaped by the Rector Major's request to the Salesian family in Europe to seek practical ways to offer assistance in the refugee crisis, paying “particular attention to unaccompanied minors and young people".

During Lent, we are reflecting on the Rector Major's Strenna for 2019, 'Holiness for you too', presenting extracts from his commentary on the Strenna, and thoughts on holiness from members of the Salesian Family, along with scripture readings and prayers for you to pray and reflect on during each week of the Lenten season.

This week, we hear from Sue, Youth Ministry Animator for our Province.

Holiness in the office of youth ministry is grounded yet often not tangible. It is the daily response to the Lord in serving the volunteers and in turn walking with the young.

Holiness, for me, is being ready and available to be used as a mouthpiece for the Word of God to reach others. The small joys in the journey are seeing the young respond to the Lord they hear calling them through this service.

Second Week of Advent 2018

Advent2 2018

Spiritual Gifts and Practical Gifts - Phoenix Summer Camps

In the second week of Advent, we hear from two of the staff from schools who bring children to our Phoenix Summer Camps, about the benefits the see for their students and schools. The camps give an active, faith-based holiday to young people who need a break they may not otherwise get. Each year, several secondary schools bring ten Year 7 students each, along with two members of staff, to Base Camp at Savio House, our Youth Retreat Centre in Bollington. They have lots of fun indoors and out, make new friends, learn more about cooperation, support each other and share prayer together - all in true in Salesian style. The camps are planned and led by the Salesian Youth Ministry team with support from additional volunteers, and each week-long camp offers a wide range of activities, including trips out to Stockport swimming pool and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Last Monday, the Salesian Chaplaincy Network gathered for a day of retreat by the sea, at Sandymount House of Prayer, Blundellands, near Liverpool.

This meeting welcomed 18 chaplains connected through the Salesian ethos. The network has grown from strength to strength, starting from our six Salesian trustee schools. As a result of many of our animators choosing chaplaincy, we now invite chaplains serving at other schools who have a personal connection to the Salesian Family, and work in the spirit of Don Bosco in their chaplaincies.

Participants on the retreat came from Savio Salesian College, Bootle; St John Bosco Arts College, Croxteth; Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Salesian College, Farnborough; St Michaels C of E Crosby; All Saints Catholic High School, Sheffield; Cardinal Wiseman, Coventry; All Hallows, Penwortham; All Hallows, Macclesfield and St Mary’s Chesterfield.
