Second Week of Advent 2018

Advent2 2018

Spiritual Gifts and Practical Gifts - Phoenix Summer Camps

In the second week of Advent, we hear from two of the staff from schools who bring children to our Phoenix Summer Camps, about the benefits the see for their students and schools. The camps give an active, faith-based holiday to young people who need a break they may not otherwise get. Each year, several secondary schools bring ten Year 7 students each, along with two members of staff, to Base Camp at Savio House, our Youth Retreat Centre in Bollington. They have lots of fun indoors and out, make new friends, learn more about cooperation, support each other and share prayer together - all in true in Salesian style. The camps are planned and led by the Salesian Youth Ministry team with support from additional volunteers, and each week-long camp offers a wide range of activities, including trips out to Stockport swimming pool and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Last Monday, the Salesian Chaplaincy Network gathered for a day of retreat by the sea, at Sandymount House of Prayer, Blundellands, near Liverpool.

This meeting welcomed 18 chaplains connected through the Salesian ethos. The network has grown from strength to strength, starting from our six Salesian trustee schools. As a result of many of our animators choosing chaplaincy, we now invite chaplains serving at other schools who have a personal connection to the Salesian Family, and work in the spirit of Don Bosco in their chaplaincies.

Participants on the retreat came from Savio Salesian College, Bootle; St John Bosco Arts College, Croxteth; Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Salesian College, Farnborough; St Michaels C of E Crosby; All Saints Catholic High School, Sheffield; Cardinal Wiseman, Coventry; All Hallows, Penwortham; All Hallows, Macclesfield and St Mary’s Chesterfield.

Last weekend, our national Salesian youth gather once again gave hundreds of young people an amazing 24hours. The Salesian Youth Ministry event, kindly hosted by Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton, is for students from Year 9 and over, and participants came from Salesian schools and those with a Salesian connection - including a Church of England school whose Chaplain is a member of our Salesian Family. A major aim of the event is to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to meet with Salesians ‘on the playground’.

If you receive our Don Bosco Today magazine, you'll have seen the article on our delightful youth retreat centre in Bollington, Cheshire. But, just in case you haven’t heard of it, Savio House offers retreats for young people aged 11-18. The retreat team is made up of SDBs and volunteers, who give a year to serve young people. Savio also plays host to other vital activities from Salesian Youth Ministry, including the RISE young leaders' programme, and the Phoenix camps for young people held every summer.

Last week the Savio House team ran a day retreat for 69 pupils from Alderley Edge School for Girls. The team were blessed to be able to run their activities in the rare British sunshine - and Alderley Edge brought along their drone to be able to capture the team and Savio in the sun.

What a great way to make sure everyone gets in the group photo!

Last week a number of Salesian Animators and Volunteers met together for a relaxed evening at St James'. We started with evening prayers and a short reflection, which was then followed by the BBQ in the garden and nibbles in the community room.

The evening was a lot of fun, a great opportunity to catch up with everyone., and we plan to make this a regular event.
