SavioNewWebsiteFeb2018

It's an exciting time for Savio House, our lovely youth retreat centre in the Cheshire countryside. Following last week's launch of  the new Savio100 scheme to support their work with young people, Centre Manager Emma updates us on their new website and a special offer.

Savio House has just launched its new website,  www.saviohouse.org.uk, where you can find all the information you need about our work, visiting us and volunteering with us. To go along with this, we have also started a reduced rate for youth groups hiring the Barns. The price has been reduced to £35 per person for a 2-night stay during the week or weekend. Through this we hope to enable as many young people as possible to have an experience at Savio House.

Fr Martin Coyle, Rector of Savio House, our youth retreat centre in Bollington, Cheshire, writes about an exciting new scheme to support its valuable work with the young, and invites YOU to help by becoming one of the Savio 100!

The Feast of Don Bosco is always a special day in every Salesian House and this year at Savio House we were blessed to have 2 groups of young people overlapping on retreat.

It was also a special day because it saw the launch of Savio 100, a fundraising initiative which aims at gaining additional financial support for the Salesian Mission at Savio House. Despite a large annual subsidy from the Salesian Province, our rising costs mean that we need to look for other forms of support and funding to continue to provide the unique Savio retreat experience to young people at an affordable cost to them.

Advent3Joy 500

This week, we experience the joy of Advent with the team at Savio House Youth Retreat Centre. We invite you to use some of the activities in your own reflections this week.

This year the Savio House community has been privileged to welcome young people from St James’ Catholic High School Cheadle Hulme and St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy Glossop for six Advent-themed retreat days. As Salesian Youth ministers there is no better way for us to enter more deeply into the season of Advent than by praying, playing and sharing with young people. So as a reflection we would like to share with you some of the programme we prepared and delivered.

They Made Some Noise!

MakeSomeNoise2017Collage

Make Some Noise, the 24-hour Salesian youth gather, continues to grow in popularity, with 300 young people from 13 schools and parishes attending this year.

On the evening of Friday 22nd September, groups of 14-16 year olds from all over the UK headed for Bolton, where Thornleigh Salesian College was again the host venue. After an opening reflection, the fun began with a ceilidh, with music from past pupils of Thornleigh, the Castlemore Ceili Band.

Good friends and good fruits at Confronto 2017

SYMUKConforto2017RM MG

Fr Roman Szczypa SDB was part of the group who travelled from the UK to Turin in August, for this year’s Confronto, the Salesian Youth Movement' European gathering. He tells us about the programme, and how impressed he was by the faithfulness of the young people attending. The photo above shows the group with the Rector Major and Mother General.

‘We are like fruit trees. People come to us in search of good fruits. What a shock if they find none!’

Have you ever had the experience of spending time at a big international meeting? Perhaps yes, perhaps no! But I have actually had this experience. Therefore I would like to share with you, who are at this very moment reading this article, what I have personally experienced. This may be helpful and of interest to you and give you an understanding of what it was like to share in the unity and charism of such an event. This took place in August 2017 in Turin in Italy, at the very heart of where the Salesians were founded by St John Bosco, who was born, lived, worked and died there. Many people from all over the world have heard of this place, Colle Don Bosco, and many people have already visited it.

Looking back at Flame 2017

Flame2017Page 500

In the Summer issue of Don Bosco Today, the UK's Salesian Bulletin, we look back at the amazing Flame 2017 gathering of young Catholics. Our Province is a major supporter of Flame, and the hundreds of young people from Salesian schools and projects attended with their teachers, chaplains, youth leaders, Salesian Sisters and SDBs.

A Catholic youth gathering and a Salesian cardinal both trending on Twitter on the same day. Who’d have thought? Well, to those of us at the SSE Arena at Wembley on Saturday 11th March for Flame 2017, it wasn’t much of a surprise.

Last Thursday, I spent a day with the first of the Phoenix Summer Camp groups, as they took a trip to the banks of the River Mersey, near Stockport, for a day of exciting outdoor activities.

At 10:30 on the dot, minibuses arrived at Burnage Rugby Club bringing Year 7 pupils from Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Our Lady's Catholic College, Lancaster; and St James' Catholic High School, Cheadle. Unfortunatley, at 10:35, the blazing sun hid and the rain came down, but the high spirits of the youngsters could not be dampened!
