SavioHouseStrennaforLent

Our reflections this Lent are based on the Strenna (or gift) of the Rector Major for 2019 - 'Holiness for you too'. We present extracts from his commentary on the Strenna, and thoughts on holiness from members of the Salesian Family, along with scripture readings and prayers for you to pray and reflect on during each week of the Lenten season.

This week, on International Day of Happiness, Theo and George, volunteers on the Savio House Retreat Team, write about where they see holiness and happiness in their work with the young. Photo: the Savio House Team 2018-18.

Spiritual Gifts and Practical Gifts - Retreats for the young at Savio House

In the final week of Advent, we hear from Programme Leader Jonny Dearden about the work done at the Salesian Youth Retreat Centre.

Savio House is a retreat centre in the countryside near Macclesfield.  Our work here is to deliver a programme with school groups and to help them learn a bit more about themselves and their connections with each other and with God.

If you receive our Don Bosco Today magazine, you'll have seen the article on our delightful youth retreat centre in Bollington, Cheshire. But, just in case you haven’t heard of it, Savio House offers retreats for young people aged 11-18. The retreat team is made up of SDBs and volunteers, who give a year to serve young people. Savio also plays host to other vital activities from Salesian Youth Ministry, including the RISE young leaders' programme, and the Phoenix camps for young people held every summer.

We are happy to report the successful launch of Savio 100, the fundraising scheme at Savio House which we announced here in early February. Over 40 people have comitted to donate £100 per year, some even more, and we anticipate raising £6000 in this our first year. While donors are spread across the Province, 70% are based in the Parish of St Gregory's, Bollington, where Fr Martin was invited to make an appeal on the weekend we celebrated Don Bosco's Feast and received such a generous response.

Fr Martin Coyle, Rector of Savio House, our youth retreat centre in Bollington, Cheshire, writes about an exciting new scheme to support its valuable work with the young, and invites YOU to help by becoming one of the Savio 100!

The Feast of Don Bosco is always a special day in every Salesian House and this year at Savio House we were blessed to have 2 groups of young people overlapping on retreat.

It was also a special day because it saw the launch of Savio 100, a fundraising initiative which aims at gaining additional financial support for the Salesian Mission at Savio House. Despite a large annual subsidy from the Salesian Province, our rising costs mean that we need to look for other forms of support and funding to continue to provide the unique Savio retreat experience to young people at an affordable cost to them.

Advent3Joy 500

This week, we experience the joy of Advent with the team at Savio House Youth Retreat Centre. We invite you to use some of the activities in your own reflections this week.

This year the Savio House community has been privileged to welcome young people from St James’ Catholic High School Cheadle Hulme and St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy Glossop for six Advent-themed retreat days. As Salesian Youth ministers there is no better way for us to enter more deeply into the season of Advent than by praying, playing and sharing with young people. So as a reflection we would like to share with you some of the programme we prepared and delivered.

Last Thursday, I spent a day with the first of the Phoenix Summer Camp groups, as they took a trip to the banks of the River Mersey, near Stockport, for a day of exciting outdoor activities.

At 10:30 on the dot, minibuses arrived at Burnage Rugby Club bringing Year 7 pupils from Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton; Our Lady's Catholic College, Lancaster; and St James' Catholic High School, Cheadle. Unfortunatley, at 10:35, the blazing sun hid and the rain came down, but the high spirits of the youngsters could not be dampened!

FarewellSavioTeam2016 17

This week, the 2016-17 retreat team at Savio House, Bollington, ended their busy year together. While some of the team will continue there, others are going on to other things. The Province is very grateful for the superb work the team does, providing retreats to hundreds of young people from all over the country. We wish them all safe journeys, and every success in future, and look forward to meeting Team 2017-18 soon! Here's what Savio House said:

These last few days have been bitter sweet here at Savio as we've been saying our final goodbyes to the retreat team. It's been an incredible year with so many memories both in community and on retreats. Once again thank you to all the schools that have helped make this year special!!!

Easter Triduum 2017 at Savio House

PassoverMeal2017SavioUrSpace

The Easter retreat at Savio House began with a lively Passover meal, and then the youth and young adult groups attending worked to create a wonderfully prayerful atmosphere for the Easter services.

As the photos show, (thank you URSpace & Sr Gill for these!!), the weekend was a spiritually uplifting experience with plenty of fun too, in the Salesian tradition.
