SJBCSynagogueLunch 500

Rahim was part of a group of Year 10 RE students from St John Bosco College, Battersea, who visited a synagogue recently, and saw preparations for Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles or Feast of Shelters, including the building of a sukkah, representing the huts farmers stayed in as they worked on the harvest.

Our trip to the synagogue in Wimbledon, last month, was very interesting. We started the session by discussing what we knew about Judaism. Questions were thrown open to both the Jewish students and ourselves which helped to get us thinking as soon as we got there.

We then got to make bread together which was a new experience for me since it was the first time I had ever baked anything. It tasted really good and we got to choose the kind of seeds that we could top our challah bread with.

Student drama builds interfaith bridges

SJBCHoneyApples 2CR

At the end of April, some of the Year 7 students from St John Bosco College, Battersea, put on a short play entitled 'Honey and Apples' which was written specifically for them. The play was based on the experience of children during the Holocaust. The school invited some external guests from the local Jewish community, and the rest of the audience was made up of Yr 11 students who were revising Judaism for their GCSEs.

The play was beautifully presented and sensitively acted under the direction of Elvira Tallo, one of SJBC's PGCE students, who, although she is not a teacher of drama, worked tirelessly with the students during their form time to bring out excellent performances. The guests and Yr 11s loved the play and openly showed their appreciation.

The RE Department at St John Bosco College, (SJBC) Battersea, told us about a very special visit they had last week.

Ruth Jampel from 'Judaism for School' visited SJBC on Wednesday to help our Year 11 students really get to grips with some parts of the GCSE syllabus on Judaism. It was fun and interactive from the start. We had model Torah scrolls, cuddly toy Torah scrolls, mezuzahs, kippahs, you name it, we had it! The students really enjoyed being able to handle Jewish items.

An unusual school visit for All Souls' Day

Fr Andrew Ebrahim SDB, Head of RE at St John Bosco College Battersea, writes about a very different school trip.

We had a very unusual RE trip on the feast of All Souls when we took some Yr 11s to Putney Vale Cemetery. Part of the RE GCSE syllabus focuses on Eschatology and what better way to understand it than a trip to a cemetery!

After an overcast day on the 1st November, we were blessed with beautiful weather for the after school trip where students consolidated their knowledge of the differences between what was a tomb stone, a memorial and what a garden of remembrance looked like.

Our hope is that the practical lesson will pay dividends for the summer...and in the life to come!

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez visits Battersea

The Cardinal, who is Archbishop of Tegucigalpa in Honduras, was in London to give the Pope Paul VI Memorial Lecture for 2003, on Friday 31st October, on the subject of JUST ONE WORLD? - Global Security and Global Poverty.

On the previous day he said Mass at Heythrop College, gave a BBC TV interview at the White City, and met various people from the Treasury, FCO, DFID, DTI, and Cardinal Cormac Murphy OConnor, who accommodated him at Archbishops House in Westminster overnight.

Before giving his lecture on the Friday, he had lunch with the Salesian Community in Battersea and met members of the Salesian Family. The pictures below were taken by Fr Des ORiordan, Rector of the Battersea Community.
