Salesians out Serving

The first SOS (Salesians out Serving) programme for 2010 ran from 18th - 28th July. It ended with a Mass and a meal in the Salesian Sisters' House at Brettargh Holt near Kendal in the Lake District. Fr Bob Gardner presented certificates to the participants and Br Sandy Fairley, who led the team, renewed his profession as a Salesian brother.

The SOS programme, based on an idea from the United States, is a ten-day Christian service experience run by, for and with young people. It is funded by sponsorship from the Salesians of Don Bosco Office of Youth Ministry and also partly through fundraising. The programme is open to young adults who are members of any Salesian School, Parish, Youth Club or Youth Centre.

According to the SOS web site, the aims of the programme are:

  • To build a faith based community
  • To allow young people to participate in service projects
  • To provide time to reflect, process and journal their daily experiences
  • To allow the young people the opportunity to help the needy
  • To provide opportunities of experiential learning and personal development
  • To allow time for prayer and reflection which is both stimulating and reflective

During the Mass, celebrated in the Chapel at Brettargh Holt, Fr Michael Winstanley (Provincial) received Br Sandy Fairley's renewal of vows for a further year.

After the Mass, the group moved to the dining room for a simple meal of pizza and soft drinks to mark the end of a memorable ten days. The second SOS programme runs from 8th to 17th August. See the SOS web site for details.
