Fr Ainsworth sets the life and work of Don Bosco and his early companions in the social and historical context that gave rise to his calling for work with poor youth. He gives us insight into a man who, from childhood, felt an urge to fight injustice, and who took his inspiration from the gentle St Francis de Sales, and the book as a whole makes fascinating and enlightening reading.

Fr William Ainsworth SDB was born in Bolton in 1908, and ordained priest in 1941. He was editor of The Help of Christans and of the Salesian Bulletin in Britain and Australia. He died in 2005 aged 97.
