Schools - Don't miss Phoenix Summer Camp 2020!

Written by

PhoenixCanoeing2017 500

Teachers and Chaplains: have you booked yet for Phoenix 2020? Don't miss this opportunity to give some of your Year 7 students who are in need of a break a great Salesian holiday. If not, you can download the booking form below.

Phoenix is a Salesian holiday project that works with nearly one hundred young people from across the country each year. In 2020, it will run from 26-31 July.

Every summer, schools are invited to bring groups of Year 7 pupils who they've identified as being both brilliant and deserving of a break away. People enjoy a whole heap of activities including canoeing, orienteering, massive water games as well as a few more sedate activities for when the sun sets.

We are always on the look out for new schools to get on board, so if yours hasn't been involved yet, but you like the sound of Phoenix, get in touch with Sue McDonald, Salesian Youth Ministry Animator for our Province.

Volunteer Receives Warm Welcome In Tanzania

Written by

BOVATanzRebeccaChildrenGp Dec2019

Rebecca is serving with Bosco Volunteer Action (BOVA), our overseas volunteer project. This is her first letter from Didia, Tanzania.

It has already been nearly 3 months since I was getting on a plane headed to Tanzania, wondering what was ahead of me for the next 9 months - here I would like to share with you some of my experience so far.

Karibu Tanzania

One thing I quickly learned about Tanzania is the incredibly welcoming nature of the people here. Since I arrived every person I have met has welcomed me like a family member, whether it be into their home, shop or school. 'Karibu', ('welcome' in Kiswahili), must be the most common word here and this welcoming nature, from what I can see, is a strong part of the culture here, and is something I am very appreciative of.

CAMINO is a 6 day training course, from 26 August to 2 September 2019, for those working in Chaplaincy or non-formal education. It aims to provide at further training to experienced educators in youth work /chaplaincy to deal specifically with interreligious dialogue in their own settings.

The course is offered by Don Bosco YouthNet, a network of 18 youth organisations across Europe, within the global Don Bosco Movement. It will be held at Benediktbeuern, near Munich, Gemany.

Salesian pilgrims in the Holy Land

Written by

HolyLand2019GpDay1 500

Our Salesian Youth Ministry pilgrims are coming to the end of their time in the Holy Land. The group of 23, which includes teachers and lay chaplains, priests and brothers, began their journey in Nazaereth, praying and reflecting at the site of the Annunciation on how as Salesians we can bring Jesus into the lives of those we serve in our schools, parishes, chaplaincies and youth work.

Ryan from our Youth Ministry team tells us about the recent event in Krakow

Recently I had the opportunity to visit Kraków, Poland, for Savionalia 2019 and it was incredible! It was such a privilege to represent the GBR province out in Poland and we were made so welcome. The weekend was packed with activities and I thoroughly enjoyed all the prayer, liturgy, games, music and dancing. Friday was filled with animation from the different groups of young people before going for prayer and reflection in the evening.

WorldRefugeeNonUniformValdocco 2019

Salesian Youth Ministry is asking Salesian and associate schools to hold a 'non-uniform day' fundraiser on World Refugee Day, 20th June, in support of its new Valdocco in Britain project, which aims to give a summer break to young refugees and asylum seekers.

Our Salesian Youth Ministry (SYM) team is developing a new summer camp project which will offer much-needed breaks to young refugees and asylum seekers aged 14-17, and they need your support. Watch the video below.

The Valdocco Project is inspired by our Salesian charism and named after the place where Don Bosco first gave hope and joy to excluded young people. It's a response to Pope Francis' calls for compassion towards those seeking sanctuary, and to "recognise and welcome the Lord Jesus among the smallest and most vulnerable." The project has also been shaped by the Rector Major's request to the Salesian family in Europe to seek practical ways to offer assistance in the refugee crisis, paying “particular attention to unaccompanied minors and young people".

Lent reflection - The parish is led to Passiontide

Written by

In the penultimate week of Lent, the Rector Major considers the heart of the Salesian spirit, in the rich network of relationships we form in our lives, and Fr Graham Forristalle looks at holiness in a parish preparing for the holiest time of the year.

Each Lenten Friday evening in Cowley, the people of the parish gather in the church for 6pm. Altar servers have come to join us, and together we follow the Way of the Cross. In the fourteen stations the family of the parish meditate on Jesus who suffered and gave his life for us all. This family has members from Latvia, from Malawi, from Goa, East Timor and Poland: from Brittany and from all parts of Europe. We are praying in English: whether this is our first or second language we acclaim the one saviour, and the image and pattern of his sacrifice is our pattern of holiness. In one scripture during the Stations, we read about the paradox within Jesus’ sacrifice. “For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

RW Rise Poster 2019 500

We are pleased to announce our 2019 RISE leadership summer project, and we will train fifteen Yr10/11s during the project at Savio House, from Sunday 21st - Friday 26th July 2019.

We have begun to look at a fantastic programme, and as we are now in our 4th year, we know how popular this project is, so we are asking all schools to start planning and to register young people as soon as possible. The form can be dowloaded from this page.

We are asking you to make the first contact with your young leaders and invite them to take part in this initiative. The young people do not need accompanying to this project, so you only have to plant the seed!

If your Yr10s took part last year, they are more than welcome to return - the programme runs over a two year cycle. If you have young leaders in Yrs 12/13 keep watch for the project for them.

Please do not leave this too late, as we had to turn young people away last year. We are restricted to 15 places so that the volunteers are able to accompany the young on their journey. We ask that no more than 3 young people from your area attend, as this enhances the group dynamics.

If you have any questions or difficulties please do not hesitate to ask us. Contact

Thank you,

RISE Team 2019
