Fourth Sunday of Advent

Fourth Sunday of Advent

Posted: Tue, 17 Dec 2019 19:06

My soul proclaims the Lord

In the final days of Advent, as our waiting draws to a close, we think of Mary, the first evangeliser, and, following Don Bosco's example, entrust to her our own vocation in life and our mission to bring the Gospel to others through our actions and words. On this last Sunday of Advent, we also pray for all expectant mothers.

by Fr Jim McGarry SDB

In the tower of St James' Church, Bootle, there are ten bells. They have not been used in seven years because of the condition of the tower.

One of the bells, the largest, is the original tolling bell, known as "Big Tom". There are nine other bells were cast in 1924 at the O'Byrne Foundry, Dublin, to form a peal. Inscribed on the largest of the nine bells are the words: "This peal... Read More »

The teaching of our Church

God was speaking to you, to each one of you, when he said: "Forget your people and your father's house" (Ps 44:11). Your duty is not the extension of a human realm, but of Christ's. Your goal is the acquisition of citizens... Read More »

Advent is a time to think of others: Savio Salesian College

Posted: Thu, 12 Dec 2019 11:07

Fr Jakub Ruzniak SDB, Chaplain, writes about a caring Advent at Savio Salesian College, Bootle.

Advent is a time of preparation of Christmas. To do that we are invited to spend more time on prayer, perhaps find a good book or attend Advent talks in your local parish. We are also invited to think less about ourselves and more about others. With that in mind, this year at Savio, we have adopted four charities.... Read More »

UK friends change lives for Kenyan children

Fr Francis Preston SDB writes from Nairobi about some of the children kind Salesian donors in the UK are helping to educate.

During my first year in Kenya, I came to understand that many children here in Kenya don't attend school, or only very irregularly, because their parents or guardians can't pay their school fees. So when Caroline, a Catholic social worker based at St Monica's parish in a very... Read More »

Christ is at home in every culture

The Word of God:

Romans 15: 5-9 Christ is the saviour of all men

The teaching of our Church

The Catholic Church is not an intruder in any country; nor is she alien to any people. Apply remedies adapted to the various regions of the world, and see to the founding of seminaries for both individual regions and groups of dioceses. Pope Benedict XV, Maximum Illud 1919
