Preparing for Lent at home

As we prepare our hearts for Lent and Easter, it is helpful to create a space at home where we can feel at peace as we pray and reflect each day. Sr Susan Richert has shared some ideas for creating a simple space, and adding symbolic items to it, especially during Holy Week and for Easter Sunday, which are included in the first set of reflections for our Lent Camino, created by Fr Gerry O'Shaughnessy SDB.

While few of us have a whole room to set aside for prayer, most of us can find a bit of space somewhere in our homes where we can be still for a short time, and place some items to help us create a prayerful atmosphere.

As Lent approaches, you could choose and prepare your own space at home. Sr Susan recommends finding a piece of purple cloth to drape, and placing a little ash or fine soil in a small container. You can then place your bible and a candle there. Keeping a journal of your thoughts and feelings as you reflect and pray during Lent is an excellent practice to develop, so bring a notebook and pen into your space too.

Lent begins on Wednesday 17 February, and subscribers to our Seasonal Reflections emails have now received the Lent Camino with prayer and reflections for each day from Ash Wednesday to Saturday 20 February. This will be available to everyone from the Downloadable Resources area of our website, from Tuesday 16 February.

The Camino for each of the following weeks will go to subscribers each Thursday, and will be available from our resources area each Saturday, for the coming week.

If you do not yet receive our Seasonal Reflections and would like to subscribe, please email

We will have more news of our two online Lent Retreats (on Saturday 6 March and Saturday 20 March) soon.
