Rotherham, Diocese of Hallam – St Bernard's Catholic High School marked the feast of St John Bosco with a vibrant day of celebration for its entire Year 10, honouring the saint who serves as their patron and spiritual guide.
More than 160 students gathered on Friday for a programme of prayer, learning, creativity, and community – all inspired by the Salesian spirit of joy.
The day began with morning prayer, followed by a welcome from Sue, a Salesian Cooperator in the Diocese of Hallam, who set the tone for a day rooted in faith and fun. Students then enjoyed a screening of the RISE Theatre production on the life of St John Bosco, offering a dynamic retelling of the saint's mission to uplift and empower young people.
Following the film and an icebreaker game, students rotated through a lively carousel of activities based on the four Salesian windows of spirituality:
- Home – exploring belonging and hospitality
- School – learning about the calling of John Bosco
- Playground – embracing joy, friendship, and creativity
- Church – deepening faith and community
Each station offered a mix of reflection, games, and hands‑on engagement, helping students connect Don Bosco's legacy with their own lives.
Just before lunch, the school community gathered for Mass in honour of St John Bosco, celebrated by Fr Dominic Jenkinson, himself a former pupil of St Bernard's. His presence added a special sense of continuity and pride to the occasion.
The afternoon brought a burst of energy as students chose between circus skills, outdoor sports, and dance workshops, echoing Don Bosco's belief that play and creativity are essential parts of youth formation.
Naturally, no Salesian celebration would be complete without plenty of sweets, smiles, and rewards, all of which helped fuel the joyful atmosphere.
The day was a wonderful celebration of our patron saint, and students left with a deeper understanding of Don Bosco's message – and a renewed sense of community. Thanks goes to the head of ethos in the school, Tammy Neal for her unending energy in bringing young souls to God. Da Mihi Animas!
