"Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." – Martin Luther King Jr.

At this special time of year, we have books to inspire and delight you. Accompany your little ones 'On the Road to Emmaus' or through 'Via Lucis: The Way of the Light'. Or perhaps, reflect with Fr Michael on the Gospel resurrection narratives in 'Alive'.

Strenna 2023 - As the Yeast in today's human family

Posted: Fri, 6 Jan 2023 10:45

(ANS - Rome) - The text of Strenna 2023: "AS THE YEAST IN TODAY'S HUMAN FAMILY. The Lay Dimension of the Family of Don Bosco," which, as the Rector Major explains, delves into the theme of the lay dimension of the Salesian Family: a family that always seeks to be faithful to the Lord in the "footsteps" of Don Bosco.

The text of the Strenna delves into the theme in seven points:

1. The yeast of the Kingdom... Read More »

'Make yourself humble, steadfast and strong…'

At the beginning of 2023, as we move closer to the bicentenary of the dream Don Bosco recalled having at the age of 9, we can recall the words he said were spoken to him by the resplendent lady in the dream.

In order to undertake the seemingly impossible task set before him, she urged him to make himself 'humble, steadfast and strong'. She also advised... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - The Baptism of the Lord (Year A)

Today we celebrate the feast of Baptism of Jesus, which might seem strange. I remember an old Bishop getting up to preach on this feast when I was at school; "we don't know why Jesus was baptised," he began, "but thank God he was!" Funnily enough I cannot remember anything else about the sermon, but it did make me wonder why the perfect one needed a baptism of forgiveness. In Matthew's account in today's... Read More »

Feast of Epiphany - Reflection

I love walking at night when I travel to my family home—being in the West Ireland it is often cloudy, even miserable and cold. Imagine the joy I feel when the clouds part and the bright winter moon shines down illuminating the path, and showing a way forward. Suddenly, there is a confidence that supports us, even with difficulties and problems. The feast of Epiphany is a reminder of God's continued... Read More »

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol

There is something very special about sharing the beautiful story of 'Christmas Carol' by the master storyteller, Charles Dickens. It is the tale of redemption-a classic tale of good conquering evil. In the story, Ebenezer Scrooge is a selfish, greedy and bitter man who had 'no room' in his heart and life for others. However, through a series of visits by three spirits he is given a second chance at... Read More »

A Christmas Carol

I love this time of year as it gives me a chance to re-read one of my favourite books 'A Christmas Carol' by the great Charles Dickens. His critique of Victorian poverty still resonates in this modern era, as he reflects on the need for generosity and care— 'Scrooge' is as much a part of the Christmas tradition as Turkey, mince pies, and twinkling lights. I was lucky enough to see the latest... Read More »

This striking photograph was taken by Rachel Posner from the window of her home in Kiel, Germany in 1931. On the back she wrote:

"Death to Judah"

So the flag says

"Judah will live forever"

So the light answers

She was right in one way in that Hitler and his Nazi henchmen were defeated in the Second World War in a rejection of fascism. That loss came at a terrible price and saw the murder of over six million... Read More »
