"Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." – Martin Luther King Jr.

At this special time of year, we have books to inspire and delight you. Accompany your little ones 'On the Road to Emmaus' or through 'Via Lucis: The Way of the Light'. Or perhaps, reflect with Fr Michael on the Gospel resurrection narratives in 'Alive'.

Sunday Reflection - 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)

Sunday Reflection - 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)

We were told last week to "take up your cross" and follow Jesus. It is a challenge that all of us, rightly, find hard; it unsettles us, but as the Jesuit peace-broker, Daniel Berriggan SJ puts it, "don't follow Jesus unless you look good on wood!" This week, the Gospel seems like an episode of the courtroom drama, 'Law and Order'; Jesus speaks to his followers about compromise and listening to each... Read More »

Resumption of Echoes for the Soul

Following the summer break, Fr Michael Winstanley's photograph reflections, Echoes for the Soul will be resuming on its dedicated Facebook page.

Below is one of his daily reflections:

Like most people, I'm a great fan of sunsets. This photo was taken on the West Shore in Llandudno, N. Wales. It is very different from other sunsets I've taken, usually with their bright red, yellow and orange hues. Here... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

I suspect a lot of us can identify with the apostle Peter in our lives today: we want the very best for our families and friends. When he hears of Jesus speaking of the pain and suffering that going to Jerusalem will bring, Peter, as a good friend, urges him not to go forward—he wanted to ensure the safety and well-being of his friend. This has been the unconscious mission of so many of us during... Read More »

Solid and good drama needs its heroes and villains: from the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham or the Wicked Queen to the good Cinderella or Robin Hood. In movies or on the stage we see these extremes; we can cheer on the goodie and strongly 'boo' the baddie to our hearts content. In the stone-cold sober light of day, most of us are mixtures of the extremes of good and bad. One day we can be the brilliant... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)

Many people find today's Gospel of Jesus meeting the Canaanite Woman rather stunning—talk of crumbs falling from the table for the dogs to eat just does not sound right! As always, I remember the teaching of one of scripture teachers, Dr Megan McKenna: she always urged us to take our Sunday readings in context. This reading, from Matthew's Gospel, comes after Jesus had fed a huge crowd of '5000... Read More »

World Youth Day Pilgrimage - Lisbon 2023

How do you start to write about the largest Catholic Gathering of Young People since Panama 2019?

Well, let's start by saying the Church is still very much alive in Young People all around the world. Officials say that there were 1.5 million people at Campo da Graça for the Mass on Sunday.

But it wasn't all about the Mass on Sunday. There were 2 weeks of activities for World Youth Day. From the... Read More »

Today our Gospel takes us onto Lake Galilee; a huge expanse of water that was a source of both a thriving fishing industry and a trading highway. I think it is very interesting that Jesus chooses the busy port town of Capernaum as his base when he began his public ministry: the Sea of Galilee was his front door to the world. While on another journey across the Lake, his friends experienced a storm... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - Transfiguration Sunday (Year A)

I enjoy reading Matthew's account of the Transfiguration—that special time when Jesus took Peter, James, and John to the top of Mount Tabor. For the people of the Covenant, the mountain has special significance, as it is here that they feel close to God. As we continue our journey through Iife, with all its complications and issues, this sacred incident helps us understand who Jesus is for each... Read More »
