Summer's here, the days are getting longer, and June is the month when we celebrate Father's Day and Volunteers’ Week along with the summer solstice, midsummer and Wimbledon tennis tournament. This year is especially busy as we also celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Take some time out from the busyness of June to reflect and read some of the books we offer.

A Year at the School of Don Bosco (1876–1877)

Giuseppe Vespignani SDB. Translated by the FMA English Translation Group.

Fr Giuseppe Vespignani's first-hand account of life at Valdocco during Don Bosco's time is an enthusiastic description of a frail and timid young diocesan priest who becomes a Salesian at the school of the great educator, Don Bosco, and later, a pioneer missionary in Argentina.

Written in the light of the beatification of Don Bosco (1929), this work can still have much to say to today's educators about the educational system Don Bosco called the Preventive System. It reaches young people where they are, shows them that they are genuinely cared for and helps them to grow towards freedom and maturity. In particular, the Salesian family is becoming ever more conscious of the need for an in-depth understanding of this system of education in order to live and share it. This book is a precious example of that system in its purest form.
