Bel Jacobs, former fashion editor for London's Metro newspaper, visited St John Bosco College, Battersea, last week to speak to A-Level Philosophy and Ethics students about the rights of animals.
Head of RE, Fr Andrew Ebrahim SDB, said, "Looking at whether animals have any rights at all is covered in the syllabus, but the textbook approach is rather dry and so we thought we would ask Ms Jacobs to come and liven up the debate a little.
"Her approach was very balanced and well thought through. The fact that the class were still talking about her presentation the next day spoke volumes. Now we need to see if they can successfully work some of her arguments into a focused exam response!"
Ms Jacobs was deeply affected by the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh in 2013. Over 1,100 people were killed, many of whom were working in highly unsafe conditions in the building's garment factories, producing clothing for international fashion labels. She left fashion journalism and now uses her skills and experience to educate people on the issues of animal rights, the climate emergency and the ethics of the fashion industry.
