Young people in Savio Salesian College take action to protect the environment with the Bosco Green Club.

Who we are

Bosco Green Club was inspired firstly by Sefton Schools Mock UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) which took place in November 2021. A few weeks later, we joined Don Bosco Green Alliance, an international environmental organisation in the Salesian world. It is present in more than 86 countries. Our school is one of first three members in the UK, alongside Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton and Leeds Diocese.

As an eco-club, our aim is to initiate and run different green projects and activities based on our school and local needs and challenges in order to create an eco-friendly school that is safe and caring for the environment.

What we have done

Since being established, we have done several projects and activities.

Green College project: In order to keep our school free of litter as well as to raise the awareness of our school community about protecting nature, a Litter Picking group was created in February 2022 with around 20 students involved. Everyday, a group of pupils and staff volunteered to do litter picking around the school.

Photo Competition: The second green project was a Photo Competition that took place during the Spring Term. The theme was ''Love of Nature'' as we wanted our participants to acknowledge the beauty of nature. There were more than 20 students and staff involved in this event. Ten winners were selected with a lovely award for each.

Bosco Green Club Formby trip: To finish our school year, we decided to run a trip as a reward for our committed eco-friendly students. The students had a great time at Formby National Trust Forest and Formby beach. We were all enjoyed walking on the seashore and playing on the grass.

Our future plans

Eco-friendly Team: In order to sustain development,we are aware that an eco-friendly team should be established with a core group of students who will initiate and run new environmental projects as well as the current activities.

Green College project: We plan to continue our positive work which we did over the last year by doing litter picking every day.

Gardening club: Noticing of a good number of students who are interested in doing gardening, we are going to have a gardening club which was started last year. We also look after the school's memorial garden.

Collaborating with Windmills Intergenerational Project: Having a strong relationship with the Windmill Foundation, we plan to have more support and collaboration this year in new green projects in school as well as our local areas.
