Thornleigh Student receives award at Buckingham Palace

A student at Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton recently received a 'St. John's Ambulance Young Achiever's Award'.

George Parkinson joined St John's ambulance in 2019 at the age of 8, and 6 weeks after he had joined, he was called into action.

While on a family holiday in Scotland, his mum, Anne-Marie, who is the Provincial Office Manager for the Salesians, started choking on some food.

George's brother tried helping Anne-Marie, but wasn't able to, so George stepped in and managed to dislodge the food that his mother was choking on.

After the incident, George explained what he would have done next, had his initial efforts not worked.

In the event at Buckingham Palace, volunteers of St John Ambulance gathered to be recognised for their work either saving lives, overcoming difficult situations or for showing bravery.

At the event, George got to meet Princess Anne. Speaking to The Bolton News, George said: "Shaking her hand was pretty overwhelming and she was really nice"
