Reflection - Ash Wednesday 2024
Posted: Tue, 13 Feb 2024 15:43
Our brief sojourn in 'ordinary times' ends with the start of a new Lent—that annual 'spring clean' that the Church gifts us. We can well remember the Covid Lent of 2020: it brought so many needed restrictions, in order to stop the spread, but that lack of human touch in the firm handshake of peace or the warm embrace of a loving hug, was so hard to endure. Across the world, millions lost their... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B)

In Mark's gospel today, we see Jesus bringing wholeness and healing. First, we see Jesus visiting the home of Simon Peter—as a side you can see the extent of his sacrifice in following Jesus. Peter, along with his colleagues, is prepared to give up the close ties of family relationships. It is interesting to note, in the light of current debates on priestly celibacy, that the very first Pope... Read More »

A bumpy and tiring path, a lot of commitment, a lot of zeal, many difficulties, but also heavenly music and splendid visions: all this can be found in Don Bosco's third dream that we are rediscovering in view of his liturgical feast and in this Bicentennial year of his most famous dream at nine years of age. Today the dream known as "the ten hills" is presented (Biographical Memoirs VII, 466-471).... Read More »
Sunday Reflection - 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B)

Last week we saw how the evangelist John dealt with the call of Andrew and Peter. On this Sunday of the Word, we are introduced to Mark's Gospel and his version of the call of these early followers. I like to see the evangelist Mark as a person who is in a hurry. He is not interested in birth and beautiful stories of shepherds, Kings, and cribs - he wants to present the 'good news' of Jesus. He presents... Read More »

Media is so important in our lives: from contacting friends on Facebook, to catching up on the latest edition of 'Eastenders'. Wherever you go, you will see people glued to their phone screens—even in our chapel, as we gather for community prayer, many pray the Daily Office from a Breviary application on their phone. Some will freely admit that they would rather lose a limb than give up their... Read More »
